Q: Please Help Me..im Losing It

I'm a 19 year old female who has been suffering from severe tmj symptoms that have been steadily getting worse.

All of this started when I got my wisdom teeth out last may. 4 days after I got my wisdom teeth out, this horrible pain happened in my ears and kept getting worse.

I was also having bad headaches, back pain, and all that jazz.

After I went away to college, the pain eased up a bit. I didn't have to take the pain medication I had been on for so long.......I felt great.

Then, the pain reared up again, only this time, worse than before. The pain is so bad that now it hurts to do anything. It hurts to chew it hurts to pretty much do about anything. My ears feel like they are always constantly blocked and the pain went from being bearable to unbearable now im at the excruciating level.
I have jaw pain all the time now. It feels like I have a sore thorat all the time too.
I've been on medicine to help control the pain, but nothing makes it bearable.

Currently, i'm on flexeril and naprosin. I went to the oral surgeon last week whos fitting me with an nti but I need results now.

I've tried exercising and eating softer food, but i'm starting to lose it.

I'm a 19 year old freshman in college and this pain has pretty much started to ruin my life. Every four hours on the dot no matter what im dong,if the pain goes away, it comes back.

Im really starting to lose it and can't take it anymore.

Please, can someone please please help me so I can

a: sleep
b: not have to take medication so much
c: live my life

i know tmj is partly from stress. The fact that I had to go away to college and go through that and having my grandmother have a stroke and fights with relatives probably aren't helping.

Yeah, I know how you guys feel. I am 18 and have had tmj for the past six months. I am a senior in high school and it sucks hearing evry1 else say how this year has been so great when for me its really been horrible ( all because of my tmj). My goal is to have this cleared up b4 I go to college (washu) for next year, but so far things havn been getting much better. Is there anything that you guys have found that has worked? All I have been doing so far is wearing a bite splint at night, and it hasn been helping that much.

There are some basic self-help treatment you can try -

1. Use lots of moist heat and/or ice
2. Eat only soft or liquid foods for some weeks. Stop all gum chewing.
3. Do not open your mouth wide for any reason (yawning). Be gentle to your muscles, etc.
4. Evaluate your posture. This is much more important than you might realize. How you are sitting at a computer or a desk can play a very large role on the stress put on the tmjoint. Go to nismat.Org (physical therapy, tmj) for some pictures of posture problems and some good exercises to do, etc.
5. Major importance - reduce your stress and keep it low anyway, anyhow possible (yoga, exercise, massage).

If above doesn't work - ask your doctor to refer you to physical therapy with a tmj-educated therapist.

Have you had your bite splint adjusted recently? Frequently, adjusting a splint (sometimes several times) does wonders. Also, you might not have the right kind of splint to help you or the splint wasn't made well in the first place. (bite splints are only as good as the bite splint maker. A good bite splint maker and adjuster is worth his/her weight in gold.)

finally - no surgery. No surgery ever. Never.

God bless...
Carol
