Q: Back of Head Flat?

I've started noticing a little bit that .Kaylee has a little flat spot on the back of her head. It's not that big & the only way you can tell it's there is by feeling it but I was just wondering .. Is it going to stay like that? I've been giving her tons more tummy time during the day so she's not always on her back& when she takes her nap during the day I put her on her belly & just keep a real close eye on her (the whole sids thing scares the caca outta me) ... This is obviously my first baby so I don't know whats normal & not normal yet ... Also -- a friend of a friend of mine was telling me that her baby sleeps all the time ... The way she made it sound it's like her baby is only awake a few hours out of the day! When I told her that .Kaylee usually wakes up around 4am, eats then falls back to sleep til about 7:30-8:00 then shes awake til about 12:30 & up the rest of the day til about 7:30 then she sleeps through til around 4am, she told me that that's not right, that .Kaylee should be sleeping 3-4 hours at a time, waking up for a while, eating and everything then sleep for 3-4 hours and keep doing that... I don't have .Kaylee on a schedule which I don't know if that's bad either lol ... Is it bad that she is awake most of the day?? Sorry so many questions!! A little help would be great tho!!

I don't think so. How old is your baby? I know chu started to stay awake more during the day by the time he was a month old. Then when he got another growth spurt his sleep schedule changed again and he started sleeping more again. I think that they go through cycles with it.

My son wears a helmet. He was smashed inside me, and needs physical therapy for his neck.

If it doesnt improve she may need one.

Does the pediatrician feel her head at her appointments? If they're not concerned then it's probably fine. Babies spend a lot of time laying down so I think they're bound to get at least a tiny flat spot. You're doing good with tummy time and having her nap on her belly, i'm sure she's fine. I'd bring it up at her next appointment though.

I think your friend sounds like a know-it-all. All babies are different, some sleep a lot, some have a lot of awake time, they don't all need to be on the same schedule. My baby is 6 weeks old, some days he'll sleep all day waking up every few hours to eat, other days he'll be awake from 8-5 without a nap. You should tell your friend you think something's wrong with her baby if it sleeps all day. Twisted Evil

A baby having a flat head it because she sleeps on her back. In the old days they'd turn the baby's head so that it wouldn't deform.

My baby slept on her belly since she was in the hospital nursery. She never got the insane bald spot on the back of her head(that can stay until a year old) and her head isn't mishapen.

Don't freak! This is normal!! Ever since the "babys face up", this has been a regular thing.

How old is your daughter?? I forget...

When .Oni was a newborn, she slept a lot. When she hit a month is when she began staying awake for long periods of time.

To compare babies is the worst thing. Don't ever compare your baby to someone elses. No 2 babies will ever be the same.

We don't mind questions...We were *all* new mommies at one time. Hell, we still are! Wink

Fyi;trace didnt get a flat spot from back sleeping. The pt clinic said he has torticollis and plagiocephaly because of the way he was positioned in utero.

I am tiny, and he didnt have much room, so his head was tilted inside me, and most likely pressed up against my side.

The earlier you start treatment, the better. (if your doc feels she will need treatment)

Haha yes this girl does act like a know it all when it comes to babies. Her son is only 2 weeks older than my daughter but the way she talks to me about how I should be raising my daughter - it's like she's had 15 kids lol. I was nice about it when she told me .Kaylee should be sleeping more but I kinda figured that she was okay. She's obviously getting enough sleep so that's good with me Smile

i'm definetly going to tell the doctor at her next appointment about her flat spot. It kinda scares me I was just really hoping it wasn't going to stay like that forever! Thank you so much for all the replies!! At least now I know if I have stupid questions about being a new mommy that I have somewhere I can go to ask! Thanks again ladies!!

I think you should definately talk to your doctor about her head. Best to get it checked for your baby's sake.

My son had plagiocephaly and had to wear a .Starband for 4 months. He is alot better now. I posted about it a few times. If you have any questions or want to talk about it feel free to pm me.

I would check with the doctor the next time that you go in for a visit. Give her as much tummy time as she will put up with. Her being awake during the day is not a bad thing. It will help her learn to sleep at night and that will be good for you.

Hi, my son had that kind of little 'flat spot' on the back of his head too even though he was feeding and sleeping in different positions all the time but it is all fine now and got better by itself, the clinic sister just told me to just give him more tummy time and things!
And as for the sleeping routine I wouldnt worry too much what your friend is saying, all babies are different and sleep differently my son took a while to get into sleeping routine!!

I agree, talk to your Dr. You are not asking too many questions! Heck I used to call my dr lots, and I was a nurse. You rarely find no two babies or people that are the same. We are here to help you! Keep us posted!

my son head was flat at the start it beacuse he slept on it at the same postion all the time, dont worry it will shapen itself out if your really worried see a doctor otherwise its normal, and every baby is dfferent when he gets about 2 try to set a routine but for now dont worry its normal for your baby not to have a sleeping routine he's ony still young, try to sleep when he is sleeping so your not tired.
