Q: Kidney pain while urinating
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 13th, 2006
10 years ago i had a bad kidney infection, had to stay in hospital while being treated. they discovered a cyst on my right kidney, through ultra sound scans determined it was nothing to worry about but could change in the future.

recently i have experienced an intense sharp pain in my right kidney region while urinating. this happens approx 3 times a week.

what could this mean?

i drink nothing but orange juice squash and water and my diet is quite healthy.

Maybe you need another ultrasound scan of the abdomen to check the kidneys. Kidney stones can cause sharp and severe pain such as that which you describe. A renal cyst, on the other hand, can’t cause any pain except if it is inflamed. You can consult a nephrologist for further specialty help.
