Q: Tummy Time

Hi everyone Smile I just had a quick question about tummy time... My daughter is 2 months old & i've been doing this with her since she was born. Is there a set time that I should be doing this for each day or am I pushing her too fast by doing it everyday?? Also I was told that when she is doing her tummy time and starts getting frustrated that I should leave her alone for a little bit bc that is what teaches babies to get up and go...Am I wrong on all of this?

I was under the impression that when they get frustrated, that's when you turn them back over. If you leave them to be frustrated, they will learn that they do not like being on their tummy and will not tolerate it. This early on, tummy time isn't for learning to "get up and go", it's for learning better neck/head control and to push up onto their hands.

When I do tummy time with my daughter, I get down with her so that she sees she isn't alone. She's always had amazing muscle control in her neck though.

Okay that's what I do is turn her back over when she gets frustrated but my boyfriends parents tell me to just let her go for a little while. She's also had really good control of her neck. The night she was born she was already holding her head up on her own Smile I also get down on the floor with her when we do tummy time. She likes it for the first few minutes, she'll smile and try talking but after that she hates it. Thanks for responding!

If she gets frustrated you just walk away? Aw thats cruel...You should turn her back over immediately imo.

No I didn't mean that to sound like I actually leave her there to get frustrated!! I've always either picked her up or rolled her back over but my boyfriends parents disagree with everything that I do... That's why I was just asking. I didn't mean for anyone to take that the wrong way.

Our pediatrician said to do tummy time as much as possible every day. Because of "back to sleep" babies don't get as much tummy time as they used to so try to do it as often as your baby will let you. He also told me if finn starts fussing to leave him a bit because when babies get mad and they're on their tummies they'll usually push up on their arms and hold their heads up, which is good for them.

Allie, you don't walk away! You just don't roll them over immediately. Nobody said you had to abandon them! Finn gets mad but I don't flip him over right away and if I talk to him and get down there in his face he'll usually settle back down after a minute and we can go a bit longer.

We have tummy time everynight when I get home from work. I never leave her to get mad and upset with it. Melia now is rolling over so she gets on her tummy by herself now. But when she gets frusterated I just flip her back over and she is ok again until she flips back over and she is great for a few more and then she frusterated and we start all over again. Lol that is how we do it.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone and i'm sorry about that little misunderstanding there. At least now i'm not feeling iffy about doing tummy time with her everyday. I've only been doing it once a day tho but i'm going to start doing it a few more times Smile thanks a lot!!
