Q: HSV Infection and having children
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 12th, 2006
I have genital herpes which I have had about a year now. The guy I got it from I am still with and he had no signs or symptoms only a bump on his lip. We are pretty serious, he is a great guy and there is a great chance that we will stay together. My question is what are the chances that we could have childern together and have healthy babies. This may be a crazy question, but is his semen have the herpes virus in it, does that cause any problems. He only has bumps on his lips and sometimes on the skin around his mouth, he does not have anything down there. I just feel like i am crazy for wanting to be with someone who gave me herpes, but he is a wonderful guy and he did not know he had anything when all this happened he found out when I did. Please help!!!

Infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) does not affect the ability to fertilize an egg for either men or women. If HSV-infection is the only disorder of your reproductive system, you have great chances to conceive. HSV-infection in pregnant women, however, can be potentially very dangerous for the fetus. That’s why pregnant women with HSV-infection do not deliver naturally but via a section cesarean to avoid infecting the baby during delivery.
