Spotting Or Implantation Bleeding On the Pill? Posted: 12-11-06 21:47pm
I have been on birth control pills
(aviane) for two years now. I never
miss a pill, however, during last month's
pack I took antibiotics for 5 days and
used back-up for two weeks. After
finishing the antibiotics and finishing
that pack my period started just like
normal.
I am now in the beginning of my 3rd week
of this month's pack of pills. This
afternoon I noticed brown discharge and
later tonight I have noticed some blood.
I am not supposed to start my period
for about a week, when I get to the
placebo pills. I have not spotted
since I first began taking the pills 2
years ago. What is going on?
I have not had sex since the placebo week
of last month...
I'm really scared, if anyone has any input
please let me know.
Thanks

There is nothing to be scared about,
almost all women have some sort of
spotting at some time during birth control
use.
As long as it only lasts one month, then
it is considered transient, just a fluke.

Thank you carifairy. I hope everything
is fine.
I've read some things about implantation
bleeding and I really am hoping and
praying that is not what this spotting
was.
Has anyone ever experienced spotting like
this after being on the pill for a couple
years?

Hello again,
the spotting only lasted monday and
tuesday and now it's gone. My period is
supposed to start around next tuesday and
i'm praying it does.
Anyone else experience anything similar to
what i've posted?
Thanks

The pill prevents ovulation, so
implantation bleeding would be unlikely.
Also, just as an 'fyi', only about 1/3 of
women will have implant bleeding, most
will have no symptoms.

It sounds like you're having breakthrough
bleeding on the pill. It is probably the
most common side effect of being on the
pill. It is nothing to worry about, but
it can be annoying. If it goes on too
long, you might have to switch brands of
pills (for example, on ortho-lo, I was
bleeding 3 weeks of every month.) the
chances of your being pregnant are about
0, in my opinion, especially if you were
properly using backup protection while on
antibiotics. Don't worry about it.
