Birth Control/ Condoms Situation
Posted: 12-10-06 14:52pm

Hello all,

i have a sexual topic to discuss...
I've been on birth control for almost three years. I started it for female period issues (i get extremely sick when my period starts without them, even though I do not have a heavy flow.) I was formally on ortho tri cyclen- lo, but I switched to yasmin because ortho had me spotting early.
I've been taking the yasmin for about 8 months. I've never skipped an active pill while on yasmin, and if I ever take a pill a bit late, it is never more that 3 hours than normal (this is very infrequent, simply forgetting if I am busy and then I realize.)

in the past 4 months, I recently started using bc for it's actual purpose.
And i'm very good at taking the pills. I request that my boyfriend use condoms, because I am quite paranoid. Before I was on bc, I had a condom break on me, and even though I was not pregnant, I don't want to risk that again.

My boyfriend did not use condoms in his last relationship, but he doesn't really complain with my choice to do so.

Last night we had sex without a condom, because we didn't have one with us...Not like you need details, haha. And yes, I took my pill this morning.

He would prefer that we did not use condoms. I don't know if i'm quite ready for that, even though I could name tons of couples on birth control who skip condoms.

I would like to consider other forms of "second protection" along with my yasmin, such as the vaginal contraceptive foam but I have never tried any of these things.

Does anyone use foams, gels, or other things along with their birth control? What do you like? What works for you?

I would really appreciate some ideas. I know eventually I will have sex without condoms frequently, but would like comments from users.

Thanks in advance.

Before I went on bc my boyfriend and I used both condoms and spermicide gel, and he also withdrew (we're also really paranoid). I didn't mind the spermicides too much, except that it was kind of inconvenient and interfered with spontineity. Of course we were using condoms anyway so that wasn't a huge issue. I believe there are some kinds that you can put in hours before intercourse, so you might want to check that out. There are a bunch of different kinds. However, spermicides aren't as effective as other types of bc. Also, spermicides increase the risk of urinary tract infections, so that may be something you want to take into consideration if you've ever been prone to those. I've had to stop using spermicides for that reason. But my boyfriend and I have become comfortable with just the pill. The pill is very effective if it's taken correctly and consistently, and would probably provide the same level of effectiveness as using a condom and spermicide together. That may just be something you want to consider, but I definitely understand the paranoia. You could also just ask him to withdraw. Definitely not a method that should be relied on, but could be used in conjunction with the pill. Of course that's something you need to decide if you're comfortable with.

Good luck Smile
