Q: Medical Vs. Surgical Abortion! Need More Info And Help Pls.

Hi there. I recently found out I was around 6 weeks pregnant. My partner and I have decided we are not ready for this baby, so we're getting it terminated. I live in a country where abortion is legal so I went to a clinic to set up an appointment and such. The doctor asked me what kind of process I would want, medical or surgical.

Medical abortion is when they give me medicine(?)on one day, I go home, get contractions and whatnot, then go back. Then I take another one and then I bleed it out. (i think that's how it goes anyway).

Surgical is when I go there, and they give me local anesthetics and then take the fetus out with some aparatus.

My question is, what do you guys think is the safest way? I live at home, and I do not want my family to know. They said with surgical, the process takes a few minutes, and I just have to stay there for a couple of hours after. But I am not entirely sure if this is safe or not. The medical route seems painful, and my parents might find out. And I want to do this with the least amount of pain as possible. And is the number of women getting complications afterwards really high?

If anyone can give me more information, or advice with this, I would really appreciate it. I'm having it done in 2 weeks time and am really scared.

My opinion if you have totally made up your mind that this is what you want is to go surgical because it does not take long. You do not have to go back except for a follow-up appt. You can pm .Cairifairy as she works in an abortion clinic and can give you further information on this. You will be experiencing some cramping and will probably need to go home or somewhere and rest for the day but like I said, you should pm .Carifairy.

Medical abortion does tend to be more painful than surgical, and it takes longer.

Both are equally safe.

Surgical abortion is done with suction, it only takes 3-5 minutes, so it is very quickly done.

You can be asleep for a surgical abortion, but you would have to find a clinic that offers this kind of service. I am sure you could find a clinic which offers asleep sedation.

Thanks. I read most of the threads and I think i'll go for the surgical one. Do people usually experience complications like the "horror stories" we keep hearing? Or are there more people who doesn't really go thru a really horrible time. I know about the bleeding and the cramping and thats fine.

I have really decided on this. My partner and I were using a condom, but god knows what happened because I did not get my period on its due date (im regular, 28 day cycle) so I took a home preg. Test and here now I am 6 weeks in. I really don't plan to have a child right now. I cant take care of it and i'd probably end up just not loving it, so yes I am really decided.

I really have no one to talk to about this except my partner, who is very supportive. Everyone else is super anti- abortion.

I work in a clinic, and I see a lot of successful abortions, not horror stories.

I have had 3 abortions, and all were positive experiences.

I know that a lot of people are anti-abortion, and some people do have negative experiences, but that doesn't mean you will.

You are welcome.

Abortion care is a field of medicine, and just like any other field, you are going to find displeased patients. I always tell women to ask for reccomendations of good clinics, and ask a lot of questions/

in my experience, the women whom have regrets are the women that were forced or coerced into an unwanted abortion.

Local Anesthetic?
Can someone give me a clear picture here? Because on the brochure they said they will only give general anesthetic (the one that puts you to sleep?) if both doctors agree you're not strong enough or you really really need it.

Will I feel anything when they're doing the abortion if they give me local anesthetic? I am going to be awake and I really do not want to see anything/ (i.E. Me being injected, the docs doing the whole process). I am really scared of needles. And how will they give the anesthesia?

Sorry about this, ive never had any medical procedures before so I am totally clueless.

if you don't get general anethesia, then closing your eyes and laying your head back is going to be not only the mot relaxing but also the most comforting thing to do.

its not a bad think, basically its the opening of the uterus, it stays closed to prevent bacteria/germs from entering the uterus. When your pregnant/in labor your cervix dialtes to allow the baby to pass through, when you are on your rags you cervic usually dialtes as well to about 1 cm.

What they do is they force your cervic to dialate by inserting I believe like a stick so they can suction the baby, they should give you a prescription for antibiotics after as well as preventative measure against infection. Both times I had my kids I got infections an it sucked but they never provide antibiotic to woman who give birth lol. I think they treat woman who get an abortion better lol!

Dont worry too much you will be taken care of well!

They need to open your cervix so that they can insert the suction tube into your uterus, that is what dilation is.

Aaaaaaaah!!! Very Annoyed And Confused!!!
So I went for my first appointment... And when the doc was giving me the check up he said I might be more than 8 weeks pregnant!!!!! .O.M.G!!!! He said he thinks its around 14 weeks!!! 14 weeks??? But I had all my period regularly!!! Except november which was when I took a home preg. Test!! Arrrrggg!!! Can this be possible?? I had no symptoms before!! Only these last few weeks! Now I have to wait for a freakin ultrasound on monday to see how big the thing is!! I was so positive about this but now I am just mad/ annoyed. I was on the pill and I just stopped taking it after my october period which I am certain was a period. Arrrrrrrggg! And they said if I am more than or about 16 weeks, ill have to wait till after new years! This is absolutely not good news!! Argh.

Could I have been pregnant and on the pill so I was getting my period??? If so, wont the fetus be abnormal??? How come I didnt get any symptoms? I am short (5'1) and thin...But I get fat easily...And im not even showing. Shouldnt I be showing already if I was 14 weeks? Omg omg omg. Sad Sad Sad

Dj12...

Take a deep breath Shocked

because you are so thin, perhaps your uterus just feels larger than it normally would in a normal sized 8-10 pregnancy. This is a possibility, especially since only an ultrasound can accurately gauge gestation.

Do you live in the uk? Just in case.. Sometimes 'anti abortion' centers pose as aboriton providers, they will often postpone abortion until it can be too late. Make sure you are going to a real abortion provider.

Many women have an abortion at 14 weeks, and I have assisted in abortions until 20 weeks.

No I live in new zealand... And we have like 5 abortion places, all of which are government funded (?) I think... Theyre on the main hospitals anyway.. 1 from every big region. And I don't think they're pro- lifers as the doctor was calling every place to an ultrasound right then..But I guess there are plenty of pregnant women. Plus I have to do that bladder thing...I wasnt listening.

Cairfairy, can it still be possible that im still 8 - 10 weeks? I hope it goes well in the ultra sound, as I am really really really not ready for a young one. And I really want to do it surgically because if i'm over 14 weeks the doctor said theyre going to have to induce labour (?) I think... Im much calmer now.. But still really frustrated.

Thanks for everyones help again. =)

Labor induction is a method of abortion, but here in the us it is mainly done for women aborting for medical reasons.
