Q: Is Lump in throat caused by Anxiety Disorder?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 7th, 2006
I've been having this lump feeling in my throat. The first time I noticed it was when I ate jellybeans. Why jellybeans cause a lump in my throat, I have no idea. I've looked on the internet for related symptoms, none of them lead to cancer, but they have just confused me to the point where I've been stressing over it. I can't lie down to sleep anymore, and it's worse at night than it is in the morning. I've been popping Rolaids like skittles, but nothing seems to be working. I've even taken valium to relieve my stress issues. At one point in time, it bothers me to swallow anything and to breathe, feels like my chest is caving in and it's hard to breathe at a normal rate. Could this be all in my head(throat) as in an anxiety disorder, or is it something completely different?

Considering the symptoms you report (trouble swallowing, difficulty breathing, and stress) you can request diagnostic examinations by visiting your primary health doctor and even an ENT-specialist, if necessary. If there is nothing wrong with your throat, then remaining possibility could be anxiety disorder. There is one neurotic disorder that exists called 'globus hystericus', wherein a person believes that there is something in his throat. In that case, you would need help from mental health doctor.
