Q: How to diagnose pain beneath sternum?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 7th, 2006
I have had pain in my abdomen for several years off and on. They could never seem to find out what was causing this. I have had CT scans, X rays, Ultrasounds, bloodwork, everything. The pain is right below where my ribs come together. It also goes through my back. The pain has now been constant for over 2 months. My Ultrasound showed nothing wrong. I was just wondering if anything in particular could be causing this.

The stomach is located on the abdominal surface right below where your ribs come together (under the sternum). The diagnostic procedures you’ve mentioned are not the best for a stomach and duodenum examination. You should, instead, consider a gastroduodenoscopy to investigate the stomach and duodenum. A gastroduodenoscopy is an endoscopic procedure where a flexible optic tube is put through the mouth down to the stomach and duodenum. It is the best method to visualize the inside of the esophagi, stomachs and duodenum. You can consult an internist (internal organ specialist) about your issue and seek advice.
