According to the duration of time of you've been trying to conceive (2 years) without success, it would seem that you are experiencing reproductive sterility and you need medical help. "Trying to conceive” is defined as having unprotected sex almost every day of the menstrual cycle, especially during the fertile days of the cycle. Medical procedures in such cases begin with the male partner. He'll need to perform a sperm analysis (spermogram) to count the number of spermatozoids’ present in the semen and to gauge their mobility/activity. There should be more than 20 millions spermatozoids in 1 ml of semen and more than 60% of them should be mobile. If everything is OK with his sperm, then it's your turn. Medical procedures to identify the causes of infertility/sterility for women are more complicated than for men and include several diagnostic procedures:
1. A vaginal examination with colposcopy, Pap-test and microbiological smears for sexually transmitted diseases;
2. A vaginal ultrasound to provide information about the anatomy and possible functional issues of the uterus and ovaries;
3. A full hormonal analysis (FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, thyroxin, testosterone, DHEA)- provides information about the function of the axis hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries;
4. A hystero-salpingo-graphy (HSG)- contrast X-ray procedure that gives information about the passage through the uterus and oviducts, and
5. A hysteroscopy with laparoscopy- endoscopic procedures - provide the best visualization of the inner and outer anatomy of the reproductive organs.
