Q: Ovulation: antibiotics and OCPs contraindicated?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 6th, 2006
I recently posted this in the general forums, however, now I saw that I could ask a doctor directly and would REALLY like your input...

[[*summary* i have been on ocps for the past two years. I was prescribed the antibiotic macrobid for a uti and started taking it during the first week of my pills for five days and stopped taking it at the beginning of the second week of pills. The medication was not labeled as a kind that altered the effectiveness of ocps and my doctor did not mention it either. However, I did use a back-up method while taking the antibiotics and for two weeks afterward. Yet, when I started my withdrawal bleeding or "period" during my fourth week of placebo pills, I did not use a back-up method.
My question is: could I have ovulated during the fourth week of placebo pills because of the prior antibiotic use?]]

just to clarify a little bit...I took the 5-day antibiotics from friday of week one to tuesday of week 2. So following the medicine I took the remaining 11 active pills before the week of placebo pills. Are the 11 pills enough to stop ovulation from occurring that fourth week of no hormonal pills?

Thanks again, I appreciate any advice you may have.

Birth Control Answer A1901
It is possible to ovulate during the last 7 days of the OCPs cycle if the hormones from the oral contraceptive pills were somehow blocked... but in that case, you wouldn’t experience the monthly vaginal bleeding (the false period stimulated by the hormones). Vaginal bleeding during the last 7 days (placebo pills) is evidence enough to confirm lack of ovulation. If ovulation had occurred, the yellow body, created from the ovarian follicle, would produce enough hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to prevent menstruation (the false period).
