Hi ladies!

My son max is nearly 21 months old and still in nappies. I was just wondering when you guys began potty training your children? I think it's too early yet for my son but was thinking of trying when he is about 2-2 1/2?

Also, how do you get started? Just whip the nappy off one day? I'm scared!!! Laughing

thanks!

Layla isn't potty trained yet. Shocked

there is no set time. You need to wait until they recognise that they have done something. Without that it will be very hit and miss. Once they become aware that they are pooing/weeing then you can start

I potty trained tre when he was 2 1/2. At age 2 I started letting him sit on the potty so that he could get comfortable with it, and told him that that was where big boys pee-pee and stinky, and for a couple of weeks when he would pee or stinky in his pampers...I would point out that babies pee-pee and stinky in their diapers and I would ask him where big boys do it and he would tell me "potty" then I would let him go to the potty (to show me where the potty was) I did all of this for a couple of week just so that he could get used to the potty and the fact that he was going to be a big boy soon and would have to use the potty.

Then one day I made a fun day out of getting big boy jockeys and throwing away the baby diapers (all young boys and girls want to be a big boy/girl, so they get excited when its time to do big boy/girl things).
Everyday without fail he wore his jockeys and every 15 minutes I told him to go and sit on the potty ( I also had his daycare do the same thing) I also told him to let me know everytime he wanted to pee or stinky ...Sometimes he still peed/stinky on himself and we would just clean it up with a tissue and put it in the potty (because that is where the pee/stinky is supposed to go) after the first two weeks he started to remember to go to the potty because they do not like wet jockeys/panties because it is very uncomfortable...Although every once in a while he still made a mistake.

I would say it took me a full month to get him potty trained starting from the day I put him in jockeys. After he was fully potty trained I started to let him go into the bathroom with his father to see how men stand up and pee (because it is less confusing during the potty training to let boys pee while sitting down). He got that down after about a week all the way down to the end where you "shake it shake it" lol and he says the words when he shakes (his dad taught him that part).

Even now he misses the toilet sometimes when he is distracted. And we are still trying to teach him how to clean himself properly after stinky.

But all in all, it takes alot of patience and consistency....Find a method that is comfortable for you and your child and keep at it until they get the hang of it, you can't start and then give up.

Also pull-ups are not good for potty training because they feel just like pampers.

It scares the heck out of me that you all wait so long Shocked if a kid can walk s/he is old enough to be potty trained.

Why cost yourself all the expense of nappies for what 12-18+ months longer than you need to?

Me and graham were potty trained by 12 months, rob was a little later but he was trained by 14 months.

lol kia

i waited so long because tre was and early walker but a late talker and I wanted to make sure he was able to talk back to me so that I could know that he understood what was going on.....Hence making the whole process easier.

Also on this side of the world, age 2 - 3 is the normal time for potty training.

Yeah, I feel my son is too young right now. He's not talking well yet and I want to be able to communicate better with him before I start trying to potty train. I know he understands more than he can speak but I still feel it's too early for him.

My mom tried to potty train me when I was 1 1/2, and again at 2, and neither times worked. I flat-out refused to go in my potty seat.

The only thing that worked was when they started bringing me to day care. I got so jealous of the other little girls wearing "big girl" panties and was embarrassed that I was still in diapers. That's what did it for me.

Yay for vanity. Laughing

I'm not going to potty train chu until he's ready to be potty trained, I think that otherwise you're just fighting an uphill battle...

I trained aydan at 2 1/2 and trained lucas at 2.
Buy him a potty now and explain what its for, just encourage him to sit on it sometimes, like when hes getting dressed in the mornings. But if he doesnt want to thats fine, he will when hes ready!!!

Just take your time and dont worry about rushing anything! I remember with both of mine I had a potty in the house ages before they needed to use it so they were used to it. Then at first I would just try in the mornings, every so often sitting them on it and asking if they wanted a wee. Neither of them actually took themselves to the potty for quite a while.

Warning... Potty training can be very frustrating!!!! But just stick with it and be calm. I would leave it till hes abit older and maybe try in the summer then he can wear less clothes and that will make it easier for him also if hes out in the garden alot you wont have to scrub your carpets after accidents!!!!

Foxy, I didn't know our kids had the same name! Just spelled a tad differently!

I bought trey a potty a few months ago and because he sees kids at daycare using one, he knows that if I say poo or pee then he sits and grunts (it's quite funny) or if i'm peeing, he'll sit on it. But he doesn't know exactly what it is yet. Everyone I know said for boys wait till they are about 2 1/2 even 3. Don;t know if i'll wait till 3 but by 2 1/2 i'd like him to use the potty.

As for if they can walk they should use the potty, trey was running around at 9-10months. No way was I able to potty train him then, lol.

They say it's bad for their systems to force it on them too young too. I know a lot of kids who were potty trained young and now have bed-wetting probs.

One of my sil just started potty training and her boy is 2 1/2. He wasn't even interested in the potty before then. Now he wants to use it because he saw a commercial for spiderman underoos and he wants them.

I don't know if this is a culture thing or a generation thing.
But at 2 years old I went to play group (pre school) and all of the kids there were potty trained and there were never any problems.

Myself and my bro's never had any problems at all.
Maybe it's because my mom didn't work or whatever, but during the day (like after feeding/drinking) she'd sit us on the potty, it was just always there.
Oh and none of the 3 of us ever wore a disposable.
Until coming on here i'd never heard of people leaving potty training so late and it does shock me. I mean I accept thats how you guys do it (there sure is a lot of you) but it's just something I can't get my head around.

Yup, one biased view Smile

while I accept you guys do it that way, it's never been my experience, and none of use were ever in dispoables either so we knew when we were wet and learnt to recognise the feeling of needing to pee before the nasty wetness occured.

I don't agree with that site or the waiting until child is 2-3 years old - in fact I passionately disagree.

But there you go, I have quite a lot of old fashioned views on raising children.

But here's some biased more to my views
http://www.White-boucke.Com/reviews/i nfantpottytraining.Html
http://www.Timl.Com/ipt/

just because you can find anything to show anyone's point of view.

At the end of the day, my nan raised 3 boys who were all potty trained byt the time they were walking and never had bet wetting, my mom had 3 kids - exactly the same and my mom along with both her brothers were trained the same too.

Maybe it's generation maybe it's culture - I don't know, but I do know that any child of mine will not be in nappies at 18 months, 24 months - 3 years or more.

I'm showing you the reason people think the way they do here. Now you see what we're told so now you know why we do it the way that we do.

No, I accept, that I really do. Like I said I don't know if it's culture or generation based, but it seems all of you guys do it that way and I accept that.

But accepting, it doesn't mean I agree Wink
