Q: Bulimia Criteria

Hi,
i saw my gp about a month ago and mentioned I was worried I was bulimic. He has referred me to a ed unit at a nearby psyc hospital but I have not received an appointment yet.

I know it sounds crazy but I am worried that when I finally go they will tell me I do not have a problem.

I have been reading online and I am not sure I would fit the criteria for bulimia. When I binge I don't eat that much, for example I read that some people binge for hours and eat thousands and thousands of callories. I don't, for example I may just eat half a packet of biscuits, some ice cream, a little bit of chocolate, as I am worried if I eat any more I wont be able to make it all come out again. Othertimes I may just purge after a meal. I also don't eat regular meals anymore, as it became hard to keep purging a secret, so the next best thing was to not eat, but I am not underweight, my bmi is about 18.5 which is normal. I have also taken to 'chew and spit' a lot recently.

I just don't know what to expect? I have been like this on and off for about 7 years and in a way I would rather not go to an appointment than for someone to tell me I don't meet criteria. But this seems crazy in itself??

Any reply would be gratefully recieved, thanks.

Hi, there.
I'm happyu to know that you'll find a way out of your ed, hopefully. Smile
you seem to have bulimia, but, as you may know or find out, there are other eating disorders classified as eating disorders not otherwise specified (ed nos), which include disorders that are close to bulimia or anorexia but don't fit in all these disorders' characteristics. So you may have one ed nos.
Anyway, the important is to healing yourself, right?

Good luck!

Hi there
i also am bulimic,
and it can appear in many differant shapes and forms.
I also do not binge on a lot of food,
i just throw up even after eating a regular meal... Or even a salad!
I was hospitalised 2 years ago and so yes you do have a problem.
There are 3 types of bulimics and I was told that the type I have is the most dangerous as if you binge on a lot then the likelyhood is you wont get it all up so you will keep down some calories.
And as in our case malnutrition is a really big issue as you are not holding it down.
I would advise you to go to your appointment and just be honest with them, they are there to help you and they wont look down on you at all,
it is a long and hard recovery process and you will have to learn to eat little and often and it is emotionally hard.
I have currently relapsed so I have to go through it all again! But I know I can do it, and you can too.
You dont always know until it is too late what long term damage you do, for example, I have had to have enamal replaced on my fromt teeth, I have muscular and bone problems, I tore my stomach lining... All through time, and now it is too late and it will take time to heal.
Please get help and stick at it.
Also you mentioned that you have not had an appointment given yet?
Well they are so busy and the waiting list is normally 12-18 months... Well it is in my area.
My advice on that is to keep calling them and calling them and they will give you an appointment sooner, thats the only way to get noticed asap!
Well I hope you are ok and that you will be strong.
Good luck,
and remember you are worth more than this demon that is controlling you...

Thanks
Hey,
just wanted to say thanks so much for taking the time to reply and for being so encouraging. Its kinda comforting to know there are other people the same.
It was actually the possible side effects that made me talk to my doctor, after a bad dentist checkup!!
I will take your advice and phone up monday to see when I will get an appointment, my doctor said it would only take about 4 weeks, I hope he was right. I take it you don't live in the uk if you had to wait so long??
I am still terrified about going but also really want to talk to someone now, my gp is the only person I have ever told and even that made me feel a little less isolated. So heres to hoping!!!
Sorry to hear you are having a bad time again, I really hope everything goes well for you.
Thanks again xxx
