Ovlulatory Bleeding And Abnormal Periods Posted: 12-02-06 13:05pm
Please let me know if anyone has
experienced the following symptoms. I am
38 and have experienced 3 miscarriages
over the past year - two of which I had to
have d&c's. The pregnancy does not
advance past 7 weeks. I go in for
ultrasounds and there's no hearbeat. I
have been seeing a fertility specialist
since may and all our tests to date have
been normal. The last one I need is the
fsh on the 2nd full day of my period.
This is where the problem comes in. My
periods have become so abnormal that I
don't know the 2nd day of my period. It
starts with ovulation. My ovulation pain
will begin on one side and then advance
across my whole abdomen. It is getting
worse each month. The day after the
pains, I begin spotting. It may come in
large gushes of blood and mucus or just be
a slight stain when wiping. It will last
for two days and then be intermittent for
about a week. Then i'll start spotting
again. It will look like i'm starting my
period and be heavy and then just spot.
This will last 7 days with me not needing
to where anything but a panty liner. I
have called my fertility specialist and
talked to the nurse and told her what was
happening. I told them that it is like
clockwork the day after ovulation. I
finally insisted on a progesterone test
this month when I ovulated and I go
monday. When I talked to my doctor
personally about this mid-cycle bleeding
she said, "that is a concern." but that
was it. I'm going to seek a 2nd opinion
but I am so frustrated. My husband and I
don't know if we should start looking at
adoption, but our hearts keep telling us
that whatever is happening is the reason
our babies don't survive. If we can fix
that, we feel confident that we can carry
through a pregnancy. Has anyone
experienced this or heard about these type
of symptoms?? My clock is ticking and I
feel like the more i'm ignored on these
concerns, the less chance i'll have of
getting pregnant at my age.

I could be wrong but to me the bleeding
would make getting pregnant more difficult
not affect an embedded embyro.
If your progesterone levels are falling
during the first weeks of pregnancy, it
might be worth discussing the merits of a
progesterone supplement for the first few
weeks.
Also recurrent miscarriages need to be
investigated.
Have you had any successful pregnancies?
Do you have problems with endometriosis?
Have you had a hsg (or hycosy is nicer) to
confirm the shape of your uterus and to
rule out any fibroids?
Have any tests been performed on the
miscarried embryo's to look for congenital
abnormalities which can lead to
spontaneous termination of pregnancy?
Have you and hubby been tested for known
recessive genes which if you both carry
could lead to abnormalities?
Also has hubbys sperm been looked at for
motility and abnormalities and your eggs?

That's what is really weird about
this...All three miscarriages, I had the
mid-cycle bleeding and stopped right when
my period was due. That's how I knew I
was pregnant. So, I have no problems
getting pregnant.
The only test I haven't had yet is the hsg
and fsh. I have had the endometrial
biopsy. I have had one healthy
pregnancy. I have an 8-year-old son from
a previous marriage. I was on depo
provera and seasonale after my son's
birth. Depo for almost 4 years and
seasonale for one. I'm worried that
those period suppressing bc's have put my
hormones out of whack. We have went
through the genetic testing and testing on
the tissue after the d&c. All came
back normal.

Definately get your hsg monitored during
the next pregnancy. Good luck with your
fsh testing.
And ask about whether progesterone post
ovulation and for the first trimester may
help.
Because if you are having a sudden fall in
progesterone it is a possible factor of
miscarriage.
This is unlikely to be a cause past 12
weeks as the placenta has developed by
then and will take over hormone
production.

I called my specialist today and insisted
that they start looking in to what is
going on since the clock is ticking.
They sent me for a post-ovulatory
progesterone test today. I get the
results tomorrow. After explaining again
what is happening each month, the doctor's
office thought that it could possibly be a
big progesterone drop after ovulation.

Well....Ready for this. I got my
progesterone level checked and it was
normal...In fact, really good. So, i'm
waiting for my cycle to start so I can
have the fsh test and realize that I
should have started well over a week ago.
Took 5 tests. All positive. Now i'm
terrified. My husband and I used
protection during the ovulation period.
I don't want to go through another
miscarriage. I am just assuming it's
going to happen all over again since they
still haven't figured out what's wrong.
And how can a 38-year-old woman continue
to get pregnant so easily and not have a
healthy pregnancy??
