First day on this site..... I had a total hysterectomy in '99 because of a 15yr endometriosis battle. For the last 8 months pain during and after intercourse has increased considerably. Sometimes, out of nowhere, I get a sharp pain that feels like it starts right at the vagina and shoots down my right leg. I can't even breathe until it goes away - which is usually as quick as it came. I also have lower back pain which feels like it did when I would get my period - this started 2 mths ago. I am soooo tired all the time. I have made an appt for a complete physical for this week and inquired if I would need a pap smear. The nurse said no as i've had everything removed and there would be no need. So i'm putting the question out there - please....Is there a need for a papsmear after a total hysterectomy?

I had a hysterectomy almost 9 months ago and I thought I was home free from a pap, but my Dr. Told me I still needed to have them. She explained that even though they had taken my cervix, there still could be some remaining cells from the cervix, and therefore I would still need the pap. I think it is just a precautionary measure.
Good luck with your appointment, I hope all goes well for you.
Take care

Hi Tiredofhospital and welcome to ehealth: Yes, cancer is always a possiblility with a woman even after a Hysterectomy...I, too, have had a total Hysterectomy many years ago and I am still checked yearly...When bleeding occurs then you follow up on it...It is possible that a small area in the cervix area is raw and they will want to look at it...Please follow through...Honey, I hear you...I, too, am sick of both doctors and hospitals, but oh, how we need them...Take care...

I had a total hysterectomy 2 years ago and my dr told me the same thing - no need for anymore pap tests. She was wrong! I moved and had to get another dr and they insisted that I still needed a pap. The Pap came back with severely changed cells which could mean a number of things including cancer. I have to go for a biopsy now. You definitely need to get a Pap. Good luck.
