I was just wondering, what amounts of the essential vitamins (folic acid, calcium, etc..) should I look for when choosing an otc prenatal vitamin.

"they" (whoever that is) say 400mcg of folic acid while your ttc (trying to conceive) and 800mcg after you conceive (or whatever your doc says) however rx prenatles are pretty cheap (mine are 12.09 for 90 days) and most doctors will send in a rx over the phone if you call and let them know your trying to conceive. That is unless you have been avoiding the obgyn for the past few years.

No I have been seeing the same ob/gyn for the past three years. He's really good. He doesn't know that I am trying to conceive or that I went off my pills in june. Do you think I should give the office a call? Would he want to see me?

You can also buy vitamins specifically labeled prenatal vitamins over-the-counter at pharmacies and places like wal-mart. However, doc do tend to reccommend prescription prenatal vitamins.

Materna is popular over here too.
Monkeygirl22, I don't think your doctor will want to see you just because you are ttc and need vitamins, I mean they will see you regardless but its a waste of money unless you have other ttc concerns that need to be addressed.

Thanks so much! I just didn't know if they would want to know or not. He probably won't be the happiest that I went off the pill again without telling him. I had some health problems last fall and so back in februrary I went off every medicine I was on. I was having horrible asthma attacks and hormones in the pill can actually make those worse sometimes. He just gave me that i'm the doctor look but shrugged it off after that. Anyways, thanks again.

I also doubt he will want to see you but a quick call probably won't hurt if you want a rx otherwise i've heard that the over the counter pills are just as good, just make sure your taking something.

I think one of the girls here takes flinstones.
The otc vitamins are just as good as the ones you need a script for.
My doc wanted me to take one with 1mg of folic acid, so she wrote me a script. I had a hard time finding one that my insurance (aetna) would cover without breaking the bank. I take nata tab fa now, which is $20 for a 90 day supply.

I get my prenatals from sams club.
I actually wrote down everything on the label and took to my ob before buying them and he gave me the thumbs up.
