I would be grateful if someone could shed light on what is happening to my grandad. He is 76yrs old, and was a heavy drinker and smoker. Last week he was fit as a fiddle, driving, active and sharp.

He then when to portuagal on holiday and on his return he complained about a sore leg, a few days later he was being sick with diarreha.

He is not in hospital showing symptons such as confusion, agitation, he seems to talk about weird things. But he is still just as sharp most of the time although he finds it hard to follow requests or commands. He is also lacking some short term memory.

The hospital has rules out stroke and thrombosis and cant seem to find anything physically wrong with him.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

simon

lucas,

you should get your grandad to the hospital for diagnosis, and check ups. Not to worrk you or anything but...It sounds serious my grandad was fit as a fiddle as well, and started having the same symptoms. It was cancer related.

Re: Whats Happening?
From your description, I suggest that you'd better consult a physician first to do a thorough examination to your grandad. And if necessary, you should consult a psychologist to find some psychological therapy. The alzheimer’s association has developed a list of ten warning signs:
1. Memory loss that affects job skills
2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
3. Problems with language; continually forgetting simple words
4. Disorientation to time and place
5. Poor or decreased judgment
6. Problems with abstract thinking
7. Misplacing things in inappropriate places, e.G. Wristwatch in the sugar bowl
8. Changes in mood or behavior; rapid mood swings
9. Changes in personality; easygoing to fearful and angry
10. Loss of initiative
the early symptoms of alzheimer's disease include forgetfulness, loss of concentration, inappropriate behavior, etc.

Flax seed powder may improve nerve system health, which is important in the treatment of alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo extract helps maintain peripheral circulation to brain. The acetyl group of acetyl l-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function, and therefore may be involved in the treatment of alzheimer ’s disease. Thiamin is essential for normal nerve function. Vitamin b12 assists maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Phosphatidylserine plays a role in neurotransmission and may support brain function and boost memory.

Please note that this is not to be taken as medical advice. If you are seeking treatment, please contact your healthcare professional.

In older people with mild cognitive impairment, hxdying a drink now and then -- up to an xdyerage of one drink of alcohol each day -- may delay progression to dementia , new research suggests.

"While many studies hxdye assessed alcohol consumption and cognitive function in the elderly, this is the first study to look at how alcohol consumption affects the rate of progression of mild cognitive impairment to dementia," study authors Dr. Vincenzo Solfrizzi and Dr. Francesco Panza, from the University of Bari in Italy, said in a statement.

In the study, reported in the medical journal Neurology, the researchers assessed the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment in 1445 subjects and the progression to dementia in 121 patients with mild cognitive impairment.

The participants were between 65 and 84 years old.
