I would be grateful if someone could shed light on what is happening to my grandad. He is 76yrs old, and was a heavy drinker and smoker. Last week he was fit as a fiddle, driving, active and sharp.

He then when to portuagal on holiday and on his return he complained about a sore leg, a few days later he was being sick with diarreha.

He is not in hospital showing symptons such as confusion, agitation, he seems to talk about weird things. But he is still just as sharp most of the time although he finds it hard to follow requests or commands. He is also lacking some short term memory.

The hospital has rules out stroke and thrombosis and cant seem to find anything physically wrong with him.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

simon

Symptoms that you mentioned are neurological and there must be something happening in his brain. If stroke was excluded other possibilities could be TIA (transitory ishemic attack), brain infection or some poisoning. Alcohol encephalopathy due to chronic alcohol abuse is also possible. Several diagnostic procedures are requested to solve the case.
Does he still have the same symptoms? Which diagnostic procedures have being made till now?

Did the doctor do any sort of work up for parasitic infections? Some people can contract a parasite when traveling out the country. Trichinosis causes the symptoms you have described. It may be worth looking into this.
