Topical Medications During Pregnancy Posted: 11-25-06 14:09pm
I was wondering if topical steroids or
antibiotics, hydrogen peroxide used to
reduce acne will harm a fetus.

Ohh um not sure.
Best thing to do would be ask your doctor
who prescribed them or your gyn.
What does it say on the leaflet in the
box? Does it say anything like "do not
take during pregnancy" or "you must tell
your medical professional if you are or
think you maybe pregnant"?

thanks so much for your reply! I don't
know if i'm even replying to you correctly
as i've never even used a forum before.
It took me 10 minutes to find the answer
to my question! The medications i'm
using are so old I don't have the boxes
anymore and the writing on the bottles are
so faint. I've stopped using them in my
daily regime. I will ask my doctor when
I see him but that's all the way in
january. Do you think this is a serious
enough question to call the emergency
line?

First off, definitely don't use
creams/ointments that are so old you can't
read the writing!
i suffer from bad allergies and eczema
and, during my pregnancy, my doctor
prescribed me low dose topical steroids
for my skin but only to be used as
sparingly as possible. There is no
evidence that they can damage a foetus,
except in high doses. Some acne lotions
can be very dangerous though so my advice
is to go and see your doctor and get his
opinion.

Oh sorry I missed the bit where you said
you won't see your doc til jan. Can't
you get a regular appointment any sooner
than that?! You don't have to wait for
your pregnancy check-up, just make a
regular doc's appointment.
Not sure what you mean about the
'emergency line' but perhaps you could ask
a pharmacist?

yeah, never use any meds that are that
old.
They can break down and in the best case -
not work in the worst case they could
react badly with you.
Also if the writing is not legible then
you really don't know what you are
taking/using.
As purestgreen says make an appt with your
regular doctor just in case - you don't
want to take any risks.
