Hi, this is my first post, so hi to
everyone.. My name is roo, i'm a 23 yr
old female and I have just been diagnosed
with paranoid schizophrenia...
I have been on olanzipine, but I dont take
that daily anymore as all I want to do is
sleep and when I am awake I am numb and
cant express emotions... I do have
olanzipine for when I have my really bad
episodes but hmmm... Before my final
diagnosis I was being tried on medication
for bipolar, I was on sodium volproate..
These did seem to stabilise my moods but
I was still suffering from things like
anxiety, and I would either be in deep
depression or have episodes of mania...
Anywyas.. I got a new pyschologist when I
moved cities and he has now diagnosed me
with paranoid schizophrenia.. He has
tried me on this new medication, which is
supposed to be teh same as the sodium
valproate, but its called dapakote.. (or
sumthing like that, I dont have them near
me) but since taking these for the past
month I have just gotten worse and
worse... I have immense paranoia, and
well basically all my symptoms have risen
tenfold.. I wont see him until next week
now, but I can imagine that he will just
say 'they need time to kick in' or
something like that, but I haventtaken
them for nearly a week now.. I can't be
dealing with waiting around for
medications to 'kick in' I know myself
what works for and what doesnt... Anyways
my point was, what type of medication have
any of you found to be most effective...
I get the fact that meds will be different
for different ppl, but I would appreciate
it if you could share some other
possiblities, ones that dont make you like
a zombie but ease the pain enough to be
able to do ordinary things again. Thanks

Hmmm. Your doctor thinks you are
schizophrenic but put you on a mood
stabilizer. I wonder why there is no
antipsychotic given? Risperdal, seroquel,
abilify... these are atypical
antipsychotics and are commonly used for
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. You
may want to ask you doctor about taking an
antipsychotic. If you are not happy with
your care, find another psychiatrist. Get
another opinion. You need to be confident
with your treatment.
These meds do take time to work. The
antipsychotics may take less time than
some of the mood stabilizers.
I hope you find a med that works for you.
It is not a precise science and is trial
and error. You may need to be patient with
this until you find the correct
medications.

When my MD diagnosed my schizophrenia I
was having powerful auditory
hallucinations. There was never a
consideration that I as bipolar. He tried
Abilify which worked terrible tricks on
me. Then he took me off that and started
Geodon. This has worked great, although
for a long time I was tired all the time.
Now I am used to it (several years later).
I wonder too about the paranoid schiz.
Any hallucinations? My voices are muffled
with the geodon, but still present. They
only bother me a little when it is
perfectly quiet and I try to go to sleep
at night.

I am Bipolar, I have racing thoughts that
always bring me down, I keep the TV on all
day to drowned out my bad thoughts. But
the doctor has me on Geodone, and I don't
feel tired, and I feel I have a clear mind
on this med. The only down side is if I
miss a dose, then I won't be able to sleep
well until I take the missed dose.
