Q: Reusable Nappies/diapers

I'm curious to see how many people use reusables these days. I always thought i'd use disposables simply because of how handy they are.. But at one of my antenatal classes a woman from a reusable nappy organisation came to talk to us about it and it totally changed my mind.

My local council offer a really good nappy laundry and delivery service for only £6 a week.. They give you a bin to put the dirty nappies in, and you can have as many nappies a week as you need, all for the same price. They come round to empty the bin and refill it with new nappies once a week.. I feel sorry for the delivery guys! Hehe. I'm thrilled that i'll be able to benefit from a service like this, and that I can help the environment.

I'm slightly worried about how good they'll be at preventing leaks etc.. But I know there can be that problem with even the best brands of disposables!

A friend of mine did the council thing you are on about but she said it was too much fussing around and he got bad nappy rash from it and constantly stunk of pee Shocked

Terry nappies are the best.

Kids are potty trained quicker, the nappies are cheaper, they are better for the bottom, a good fleece cover, and finding the right fold to fit your kid are important and if you get that right they won't leak.

I can not find any reason to use disposables over re-useables, except convenience.
And the tiny margin on convenience (and it is tiny) is far far outweighed in cost.

I am shocked how much people make having a baby cost.
If you use terry nappies and make your own (healthier) baby food you save a bundle for sure.

I would have liked to use the terry ones but everyone thought I was weird for suggesting it, dont know anyone who uses them, and didnt know much about it at the time or of any council service like that. I think its definately better for the baby tho. Go for it zany! I spend so much money on diapers...Its such a rip off. I used a towel one night when I ran out of them...That was a bad night lol I spend quite a bit on jars of baby food too, but I get the organic ones and I think its cheaper cos if I bought that stuff myself (especially organic) its more expensive, and as there's only 2 of us to eat it, lots would get wasted.

Edited to add..Sorry I voted the wrong one Embarassed

Shamefully to admit I use disposable ones. Although terrys are coming back in a big way some hospitals around this area make you use the terrys ones while your in there!

I would say definitely worth a try. I never had to worry so much about leaks when my babies were newborn because I was changing them so much I dont think they ever had the chance!!

i was told that as long you change the nappy often enough the baby won't get nappy rash.. And I don't see how it would be fussing around, I don't have to wash anything myself and the bin is kept outside so I dunno about it smelling bad.. Well i'll try it and if it doesn't work out I guess I can always swap over to disposables.

That's the right idea zanny, try it - you can always change your mind.
No-one says you have to keep using terry nappies if you start.

That might not have been why he got nappy rash anyway. Maybe she didnt put cream on him, or wash his butt enough, or change the nappy often enough or something.

True loads of babies in disposables get nappy rash (more common because the nappy holds more moisture) same as loads of babies get nappy rash in terries (because they get wet and parents don't change often enough). And loads of babies simply don't get nappy rash no matter what nappy they wear or how clean they are kept or not.

One of life's little nuances.

I get annoyed when I hold babies/toddlers with full nappies. At the mom and baby group I go to it often happens and I just wanna say to the mom look your kid is sitting in loads of pee he/she clearly needs a change! But some just dont wanna use many nappies cos they are expensive. Evil or Very Mad and im not talking about a bit wet, I mean where my hand/leg feels damp just after holding them.

eww
that is a selfish thing for them to do.
Can you imagine sitting in a wet dipaer? I would seriously ask them that.

I'm kinda obbsessive about changing the kids nappies. I usually change them every hour Confused (except on a night when I only change them 2-3 times)

i though that was normal but I spoke to some mums who go 3-4 hours all day Shocked

i get through .L.O.A.D.S of nappies but they are both in 4 (maxi plus) so it's not too bad

I think the bigger the size nappies you get the bigger pain it is! Lucas is in a size 5, but he only uses them at night because hes potty trained but the bigger the size the less nappies you get in a pack how does that work???

I change my son's nappy about every 3 hours - he doesn't need it done more frequently than that. Unless he's pooey of course - that gets sorted straight away!

He's in size 5s now too - but the only ones I find that don't leak at night are pampers and they are hellish expensive! Confused

I used to pay a bit extra for the pampers active fit cause they stretch better around layla's chunky thighs but now the normal green pampers do the caterpillar flex which makes them just like the active fit. Yay!

I think i'm going to start waiting at least 2 hours to change them cause now i'm a single mum its working out a wee bit expensive Laughing

Lucas always leaked in pampers, I find huggies the best.

I plan on using reusable, but not right away. I'm going to get use to the baby thing first, give myself a couple of weeks probably, and as soon as i'm getting the hand of things switch over. It takes one diaper between 50 - 70 years to disintegrate! That is horrible. My mom had to use reusable with my sister because she was allergic to normal diapers... Or something. She also ended up using them on me a lot of the time. I'm not positive how people clean their cloth diapers, but I will read up on it more. I probably won't use them religiously, like not if i'm going out with the baby or something, but as much as I can without giving up more convenience than I can afford.
