Q: Chest pain and fullness around ribs
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 14th, 2006
I have what feels like a rope tied around my ribs. Some times it hurts if I turn a certain way. I try to correct my postion, & usually the pain goes away. I feel very bloated with gas & heartburn. I also have more back pain than usual, sweating & chest pain. I know it's not my heart, because I have been checked for that. I feel like my rib cage is full of a big mass.
Any ideas of what it might be?

Chest pain, fullness and pressure around the ribs could be due to pulmonary fibrosis, a pre-existing condition that you have noted in your question. The heartburn and bloating that you are experiencing is probably due to gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The back pain you describe might be caused osteoarthritis of the spine (spondylosis). You can request an X-ray of the lungs and spine. A gastroscopy is also a useful diagnostic tool for stomach examination.
