I have had the mirena IUD 5 year inserted
in mid-July. I am having strange symptoms.
Extremely painful cramping that lasts only
seconds but comes and goes through the
day. I also have a discharge that comes
around the time my period would. It is
brown (I know that means old blood) and it
is sort of chunky. I also have severe
headaches since it was inserted. Are these
normal symptoms or can this become severe?
Thank you for your time.

An intra uterine device (IUD) is one of
the most efficient contraceptive methods
(condoms and birth control pills are also
very effective). But it has one fault: an
IUD can decrease the local immunity of the
uterus thereby allowing infections from
the vagina to more easily transfer to the
uterus and oviducts. Inflammation of the
uterus (endometritis) and oviducts
(salpingitis) can have a greatly negative
impact on reproductive ability (sterility
or infertility) in the future. That’s
why IUDs are not recommended for women who
often change sexual partners or to women
who have never delivered a child. The
brown discharge and abdominal cramping
that you describe could be signs of
genital infection; you should visit your
gynecologist to check it out. A headache
probably has nothing with the IUD.
