Fast Reply Please! Head Dent As the Possible Result of Imact Posted: 11-12-06 19:59pm
Hello,
i (quite foolishly) particpated in some
random helmetless kendo (japanese sword
fighting with swords made of bamboo slats)
in a park. It was all quite improvised
and I made a good showing, however I took
a rather unpleasant shot to the left side
of my head during my last bout. I had no
armor on. Yes, I know this was stupid,
but it sort of just came up and happened.
My skull is rather bruised around the area
of impact from the top left middle bit of
my head to my temple. It feels as if
there is an indentation (there is an
indentation) around the area where the
impact occurred. The pain within the
indentation is actually not as great is it
is around it, but I am -very- worried. Is
it possible that a skull fracture
occurred? The shot did not knock me down,
knock me out, cause any changes in sight,
etc. I was just daved from the immediate
impact and the adrenaline for a few
seconds, but I basically stood upright and
retook a normal fighting stance before
halting it to check out the hit. A
line-like raised thing seems to lead to
the dent. The dent is about the size of a
quarter. Are there any symptoms that I
need to look for? This occurred at around
1pm today. (6 hrs ago)
thank you very much,
justin

Pain... Posted: 11-12-06 20:27pm
Pain only occurs when I touch it, rub it,
or open my jaw wide enough for it to
effect it physically (ei. If I yawn.) I
have a dreadful cold at the moment and the
impact of a shinai is very loud so I can't
really blame the pressurized feeling in my
left ear with the impact, besides the
sound, that is.
Thank you,
justin

You should probably go to the doctor, just
to be safe. If he recommends a head ct,
then, yeah, maybe you need one. Or, it
could just be bruised and hurt when you
move because the muscles are bruised.
My son fell 45 feet out of a tree and only
ended up with a tiny hairline fracture of
his skull. The head is actually a lot
stronger than you might think.

I'll... Posted: 11-12-06 20:40pm
I'll get it checked out if I have abnormal
symtoms tomorrow. I've seen skull
fractures involving goalies in football
(soccer) games and that goalie did not get
back up and had some memory issues. I was
very conscious throughout it. A hairline
fracture would make sense, but it seems
like bruised muscle, bruised bone, etc,
but there is definately an indent. If
there's more than a bruise (and the
indent) tomorrow then I will definately
assume that this indent was there
previously. I actually knocked my head
quite unpleasantly earlier this year in an
incident at a friends house involving a
tackle and a metal table corner... It's
in the same area and it's very possible
that this is from that; that gave me a
nice deep bruise for about two weeks.
I've taken a lot of kendo shots to the
head, but i've always been armored. I've
actually had far more painful hit with
armor on, though i've never had any skull
damage or indents from them.
Thank you,
justin

None.. Posted: 11-12-06 21:21pm
None of the impact is on what would be
considered my temporal bone. The pain
seems to be seriously lessening when I
don't poke at it endlessly. It is
directly above the temporal bone. I'm
probably just beating a dead horse at this
point; it's a matter of doctor or no
doctor, but getting to the doctor is very
difficult and I can't just take a day off
without notice. Hopefully it's just a
bruise by tomorrow, the indent is very
shallow.

The dent seems to be right around the
pterion. Is that a problem?
