PAIN is NOT in your head
Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Hi All, Ongoing pain for approx 5 months ... more intense now. I'm experiencing pain in my right side under my RIGHT rib cage area. The pain travels straight through me on my right side to my back. OMIGOSH. Also feels as though I'm being kicked in that area causes nausea. SO PAINFUL, keeps me awake!!! Also, my legs feel funny, kind of weak. So far, I've been examined and tests done by my General practitoner, OBGYN, Gastro-MD, Urologist. Had Colonoscopy, CT scans, ultrasounds, urinalysis, blood work drawn yet my doctors do not really know why I have this pain in my right side. I am in pain DAILY. BTW, have NOT had an endoscopy or Hida scan yet. Perhaps that is the next step, just not certain if that is right direction to go. Truly frustrated and bummed out. Anyone out there have any suggestions, diagnosis, success with treatment, etc? Please post. Thanks! Prayer allll around and Good Luck!

Pain with 'normal' results
Hi, I'm a 27 year old female and was glad to find this site and see other people are going through the frustrations I am also. I have been having stomach problems for about 2 years now, and more severly in the last 4 months, all classic symptoms of gallbladder disease. All of my blood work has been normal, and xrays showed nothing. My ultra sound showed that the walls were thickening, and my surgeon wanted to do a HIDA scan also. The HIDA scan took 3 hours for the dye to reach my intestines due to blockage (should have taken 1) and they repeatedly asked if i was in pain and couldnt' seem to believe I wasn't! The dr looked at the scan later that day and told me the gallbladder was fine! I couldn't believe it. His 'answer' to my tenderness in my upper right side was that I must have inflamed cartilage around my ribs. And his answer to my nausea, upset stomach, heartburn, pain, gas and pressure was, 'are you pregnant?' Nice. Like I didn't rule that one out MONTHS ago! I am beyond frustrated. His suggestion was to take Ibuprofen for 10 days and call if it's not better. Don't you think if my pain was controllable with Ibuprofen I wouldn't be seeing a surgeon? I have now had several people tell me that they experienced this exact thing and still had to have thier gallbladder removed, my question is how do I convince them to do it? I'm sure that's what my problem is, and I'm tired of being sick ALL THE TIME. The other suggestion he had was to scope my stomach to look for an ulcer (which I have already been treated for, unsuccessfully, because I don't HAVE an ulcer). He didn't even seem to be concerened with the fact that there is obviously some blockage since it took over 3 hours for the dye to travel to my intestines and should have taken one. I am going to get a second opinion because I refuse to believe it's inflamed cartilage! What a slap in the face! Oh, and p.s. if you're going to be having a HIDA scan, expect to have some horrendous diareah and cramps afterwards, I wish someone had warned me!

gallbladder
I found out I have gallstones and have a surgery apt at the end of the month I feel like I can't wait that long, I know that the pain under my ribs, the diharea and nausea are normal, but I feel really tired and have had some ansomnia, I can't even make it through the grocery store without being out of breath, is this from the gallstones because feeling this way isn't the norm for me, over a month ago I was walking a mile everyday.
Thanks for your help, M.

pain in the neck!
i just had the HIDA today. it took about 45 minutes before the second injection of meds and immediately felt queasy. i had to breathe through the quesiness and had some "burps gone bad" in my mouth.

i've been having troubles since Oct 08. my first big indicator something was going on is when i thought i was having a heart attack. it felt like someone was standing and bouncing on my chest and i had horrible indigestion.

flash foward to now and for 3 weeks i haven't been able to eat anything but rice or i get a horrible stomach ache (like i have the stomach flu) and i get nauseas or have severe indigestion. i have diarrhea when i eat fatty foods.

my ultrasound was normal but suggested i had some fat deposits on my liver. my SGOT and SGPT levels were slightly elevated

i started getting these horrible head and neck pains that radiated into my shoulders for about 3 weeks after i had started a really heavy period. my doc acted like i was nuts when i went to him crying for him to figure it out. it was horrible!

anyone else in the same boat?

Gall bladder pain
Here is my story. I decided to diet and excercise last year. Started getting really gassy and my stomach kept getting upset. Then I started getting these pains just below my ribs, in the center (not to the right), and then heartburn every so many days. Went to the gas doctor (took a few months to get that far and was completely freaking out by then). Took all sorts of tests on me. I kept asking if it was food related maybe (with the new eating healthy diet) - he said no.

So, I had the HIDA scan done - gallbladder running at 10% - well, that explains that pain. (Now i have read others below, the stuff they injected never bothered me the whole time it was getting done...) But as a normal, the pain is like someone is pressing on your stomach, just below the rib cage, all the time, then when you are real lucky - it flares up (even if I eat healthy, it is random) and over time, it gets really bad - lasts for a few hours, then goes down to the dull ache again. I do notice I am sore for a few days after though. Surgery to remove gall bladder is next week - YEAH...

Now, the stomach part - I have always had issues, but what I found out (not the doctor) is, when I have too much olive oil and when I ate ground turkey, my stomach would go crazy!!! Something with those two things sets everything off - food alergies are a good thing to figure out - took me a while. Once I figured those food items out - at least the stomach calmed down some.

Heartburn - who knows - they did the scope down my throat and said the acid had irritated my throat - and i don't eat spicy food - so i just take over the counter medicine for now.

Look, it took almost a year to get where I am now - keep fighting!!!! Hopefully my surgery will help Smile

co-worker's symptoms
How long has she been feeling like this? I had an extremely similar experience. For about a month I was having the same symptoms as your co-worker, my Doctor thought it was a bladder infection, then he thought UTI. I ended up having a Kidney infection. They didn't figure it out until I coulnd't urinate (even though I desperately needed to) because of the pain, I got a fever that spiked to 106 F. I was hallucinating. Please have her ask about that. And, I believe that E.R.'s have to treat you (I'm not sure though). If she get's a fever please tell her get to a hospital ASAP. Hope this helped:)

Any Idea?
I am having pain and swelling in my right side under my rib cage. I have swelling that extends frm my right side through to my chest bone. I have had my blood drawn and it came back with iron deficiency anemia and then my ferritin came back at 7 which was very low. I have had an ultra sound of my abdomen liver and gall bladder, a hida scan, and endoscopy and all have came back normal except the hida scan was just on the edge of normal. When I take Nexium it relieves some of the pain but I still am at a 3-4 in pain. The gastro Dr says he does not think it is related to the stomach. ??
I have lost about 10 pounds in 1 month, but I am 5'7 210 so i can afford it. I sometimes feel like I am having contractions, my stomach gets hard, and if I breathe deep it helps. I have four kids and had my tubes tied, but got pregant again. After that my husband was fixed Smile I am having regular periods every month.

unnecessary gall bladder surgery
My husband has been ill with similar symptoms for almost six months. He had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound of gall bladder and liver and pancreas, cat scan, hida scan and pretty much everything. His pain is on his right and left side. He had non-Hodgkins lymphoma 8 years ago, but his oncologist ruled that out as the issue. All of his tests came back normal. However, the doctor (against my strong belief) recommended gall bladder surgery. After surgery, his surgeon said his gallbladder was totally normal! (oops, my bad!) So now they are sending him back to a GI doctor because he is still having pain. Very frustrating and don't know what to do because they cannot seem to come up with anything. Now, they are saying that perhaps he is not getting enough blood flow to his intestines. I suggested that they seem to be throwing darts against the wall to see what sticks. Just curious if anyone has had a similar experience who went through surgery only to find out gall bladder was totally normal.

Pain Management
i have been in constant, intense pain in my urq for two weeks now... i had the same pain 6 weeks ago, but it only lasted for about 3 hours... i have pain wrapping around my right side, i get a burning feeling sometimes after i eat, have a constant cramping in my upper mid and occassional sharp pains that come and go... i cannot find a comfortable position to lie in and that is about all i can really do... the pain is so bad i can't focus on doing my schoolwork, which is VERY bad...i have had nausea and some vomiting...

Just over a week ago I went to my university's health services, and they treated me for an ulcer, they said, by giving me low dose vicodin (which didn't take away my pain), a pill for nausea and vomiting, and basically xantax for acid reflux... I had more pain on Thanksgiving day (as well as the day before, I was basically completely out of it from a combo of the pain and vicodin), so I went to the hospital. The Dr. did a blood test and everything came back normal, and did an "unofficial" ultra sound because the tech was not there on the holiday. The ultrasound was like 5 minutes and he said he did not see gallstones. They told me it was just gastroenteritis and told me to go home and take ibuprofen. Taking ibuprofen caused a lot of pain.

When I got back home after Thanksgiving, on Monday, I went to see a private practice dr who I will most likely make my primary care physican, and she told me to get an "official" ultrasound and a HIDA scan, which I had today. She also prescribed me Bentyl (10 mg), to help with pain, but it is not doing a d*** thing.

Now, I am sitting here, missing classes and my internship right around the corner from finals week in immense pain, and I am told that I have to wait another entire week for my test results. I feel like I can't wait that long. I am in so much pain. What can I do about it? I really badly need something to get me through the day so I am able to get things done. I am so frustrated...
