Miscalculation or error in Ultrasound?...no heartbeat found Posted: 11-07-06 19:49pm
I am soposed to be 10 weeks pregnant, the
1st day of my last menstul cycle was
August 30 2006, and i had an ultrasound
today, and the technition only saw the
yolk sac and no baby or heart beat, she
said that i just might be earlier then i
thought that i was, and i have all the
pregancy signs, what could be wromg if
anything? Blood work has confermed that i
am pregnant, what could this mean, could i
be off on my calculation of my due date
and be earlier then 10 weeks? I am really
frightened by this because i have had a
miscarrage and a etopic pregnancy before,
i have no bleeding or cramping, what is
wrong here, if anything? could someone
tell me what the problem might be if any,
thank you very much, this is much
appreciated

At my first u/s it was hard to see much
and they thought my dates might be off, so
I had to schedule another u/s for 10 days
time, at which point the baby was visible.

It seems that there are 3 possibilities in
your case:
1. The pregnancy age wasn’t calculated
correctly and the real age of the fetus
was younger than supposed one.
Miscalculations are possible. Heart
pulsations should be seen via ultrasound
after the 7-8th week of pregnancy.
2. The embryo has died but wasn’t
expelled from the uterus (missed
abortion). In this case the pregnancy test
will become negative 1-2 weeks after an
embryo’s death.
3. The technician made a mistake.
I RECOMMEND you to request another
ultrasound examination that is performed
by gynecologist rather than a technician.
You should also measure the level of HCG
in the blood. In the first 7 weeks of
normal pregnancy, the HCG levels increases
rapidly (they double every 48 hours).
Afterwards, HCG levels become stationary
and after the 12th week of pregnancy,
start to decrease easily. HCG levels can
provide more information about the stage
of development or possible miscarriage.
