Q: Why are Palms always red?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 7th, 2006
The palms of my hands and the undersides of my fingers are red. They have been this way since I was about 17 or 18 years old. It is constant, the reddness never goes away. My hands and fingers do not hurt or burn or itch, and they are soft and smooth--not dry and rough. There are never any white splotches. I have asked every doctor I have seen what causes this, if it is related to my other illnesses, but none seem to know. Please help me.

Acne, Skin Disorders Answer A1804
Redness of the hands and fingers can be attributed to a disorder in the control of vascular tonus (dilatation and constriction). Vascular tonus, in turn, is controlled by the neurovegetative system (sympaticus and parasympaticus). These vegetative vascular reactions could be due to some kind of disturbance in the neuron-vegetative reflexes. It doesn't seem likely, however, that this particular skin redness is related with your pre-existing diseases (Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypothyroidism). You might try asking your GP (general practitioner) for a reference to a specialist who might help you diagnose and treat this condition.
