My boyfriend always gets an erection while he's sleeping. Sometimes i'll wake up to get a drink of water or to use the bathroom and his member is standing straight up! Sometimes it will even move a little bit like a contraction or something. It turns me on and makes me want to just wake him right up sometimes! What causes this to happen while men are sleeping? Does it necessarily mean he's dreaming of something sexual?

Either way it's hott Smile

That's normal :)
Every man(if normal) has erection during REM sleep( when most of our dreams occur) .So,it is perfectly normal.

Yes, I have seen my boyfriends having a hardon when they are sleeping, I never thought of it as abnormal and I'm kind of glad that they still get it hard.

Yep, perfectly normal. In fact at 52, I still wake up to the little guy saluting me about 3/4 of the time!

I think it's my exercise program. I've been an amatuer endurance athlete for 30 years. I think it keeps the blood flow good!

fyrman87,
Agreed. Good blood flow and circulation is needed to ensure good hard erections.

I, even at my old age, get hard many a times and have to hide it from my wife sleeping nearby. It is natural for men to get erections at night.

I feel, night erections are pleasurable memories of satisfying sex.Sometimes, the erection results in wet dream.

Erections at night
I am 71 years old and still get several erections a night. After retiring I joined a health club and walk for 1 hour 6-7 times a week. I swear that I seem to get more night erections than before I exercised. I still do have to use Viagra to have sex.

I was taught that most men (in good health) will get an erection 3 times a night on average. Once as they fall asleep, once during REM sleep and the third upon awakening. The reasons are unknown. It does NOT mean that he's dreaming of you or someone else, it just happens and he does not control it.

Farell, You are right about a long lasting erection. It will often become painful and is usually in that condition absent of sexual stimulation. This is considered a medical emergency as it can have detrimental effects on function in the future. This can also happen as a result of spinal trauma and is then called priapism.

When you talk about "too frequent" erections, I assume you are talking about unwanted erections without sexual stimulation which adversely effect your daily life. If this is the case you should certainly have a discussion with your physician about it.
