Q: Rabies and Tetanus
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 6th, 2006
Hi,

I was in a small encounter with a neighbour's dog about a month ago and it gave a small bite/nip on my lower leg. The dog didn't appear rabid at the time and my neighbour said that he'd been vaccinated. I didn't think it was necessary to seek medical attention at the time and just cleaned the small bite/nip. At present I think the dog is still well I think, I was just wondering about the possibility of rabies (or any infection) because recently I haven't been feeling normal but it could be a coincidence?

Also out of curiousity, can an uninfected dog pass on rabies if you know?

It may seem rather pedantic of me to ask, but having read how rabies has a rather variable incubation time I'm a bit concerned. I was thinking about going to get another tetanus shot soon because it has been a long time since I've had one.

Thank you sincerely in advance.

If the dog was vaccinated against rabies then there is no chance for you to get infected with rabies. An anti-tetanus vaccine should be repeated once every 5 years.
