Q: Learning Disabilities and Depression
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 4th, 2006
I think I have learning disabilities such as social skills deficit but my doc said no cos I can speak Japanese. But I can't function socially and doesn't seem to have the social skills program that everyone else seems to have. I don't understand instinctly what is right in most social stuations and that leads to depression and depression makes me awkward in social stuations; It's a vicous circle.
I'm on meds. Can they treat symptoms like these? Are these things like learning disabilities the true cause of the depression or are they the result of the depression?

Learning disabilities can cause social malfunction and that can lead to depression. Disappointment of not achieving something can also cause depression. Depression then stifles motivation and failure can become more obvious. You can try achieving something appropriate to your learning abilities. Try first to accomplish goals and give yourself easy, achievable tasks. You can also consult a mental health professional for tips on coping with depression and talking more about social skills.
