Q: Strange Advice From Doc

Hi all,

another question...I started lutera on monday, and the doctor told me that I could start taking it the very next day although i'd just gotten my period 2 weeks prior. I thought I would have to wait till after my period, but she said no, that i'd be fine having unprotected sex after 1 week on lutera.

But what if i've already ovulated?

Is the doc crazy? Lol. Anyone else have this happen?

You can start the pill anytime, it is called the "quick start method", and is mentioned inside of your bc leaflet.

After one week your bc will be effective.

Actually, it doesn't mention a quick-start anywhere in the info included with the pill. It says day 1 start, or sunday start. I guess I will have to wait until after my period just so I feel safer...However, since she told me I could start at any time, and like a dummy, I did, and it was a monday, I missed the first pill in the pack which was for sunday. (i didn't use the sticky labels because I figured that might cause confusion down the road when I start new packs, to always be off that one day and have to use the labels.) so I guess the day I take the last white active pill maybe i'll also take the one I "missed"?

Can you tell how badly I don't want to be pregnant? *lol*

Sunday start is a quick start. They just label it sunday so it is easier for you to remember which day to start taking pills again.

Either you begin on day one of your period and you are protected right away or you begin at any other time and you need to use back up contraceptives for 7 days (ie condoms).

The later into your cycle you begin the more chance there is of messing up your cycle for the first few months.

No the doctor isn't crazy - s/he is educated and telling you the best way to begin your birth control.

Ok. Just thought i'd ask because the packet specifically said the sunday after your period started. I was guessing that that was just so your period wasn't entirely thrown out of whack, but I wanted to be certain.

then may I suggest you use spermicidal condoms as well to further minimise your risks (although the only way to remove the risk is to abstein).

More Effective
Hi there -
some recent studies suggest that the pill can actually be even more effective if you skip the placebo pills completely, therefore avoiding getting a period and maintaining the same level of hormone in your body all the time. Just thought i'd mention this especially since you're taking lutera, which contains the best hormone amount/combination for this technique and you're wanting the best protection against pregnancy possible. For more info check out noperiod.Com where they have a lot of information on the period skipping subject. I myself will be starting lutera next week in order to avoid periods altogether!
