Q: Sciatic Nerve and Pain Management
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 2nd, 2006
I have had a stiffining pain in my lower back for about 2 months now which affects my sciatic nerve; some days are better then others. I went to the doctors & was perscribed 800mg ibprofin & my back still hurts. I am done with the meds & made another appointment to go back next week but with no insurance I may have to get x-rays. Is there another (more effective) pain medication that can help me?
Thank you in advance!

It is not possible to treat an unknown condition! An X-ray is necessary to first identify what might be causing the pain you are experiencing. Spondylosis is one possibility, for example. If X-ray imaging assumes a discus hernia, an MRI of the lumbar vertebral column will be also requested. Ibuprofen and other painkillers (ketoprofen, diclofenak, codeine…) may relieve the pain temporarily. You can go to your doctor and follow her/his instructions.
