There is nothing wrong with a baby sucking its thumb, and especially since they are going to loose all their teeth and not get permanent ones for quite a while. There is a huge difference between an infant sucking its thumb and a 5 year old sucking their thumb. Most babies suck their hands and grow out of this by age 1 or so.

"thumb sucking

generally, it's normal and healthy for infants to suck their thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or toys. Object sucking gives children a sense of emotional security and comfort. However, if thumb sucking continues beyond the age of 5 – when the permanent teeth begin to come in – dental problems may occur."

that's the flash! She does this whole "Shocked omfg" thing, and then chills back out.

I really think she might be at the beginning stages of teething. I don't think they're going to pop out anytime soon, but she's drooling a lot more and is eating her hands like they're going out of style. No increase in fussiness though.

My mother is a dental hygientist and says that reguardless of the age, thumb sucking causes teeth to buck forward, as do unorthadontic pacifiers. The shape of the noonie, or thumb, causes the "pallet", not the teeth themselves, to deform.

I mean, some people are cool with it, and some are strict. I am a strict one, only because i've seen horrible effects from it in the medical books. I mean it's baad.

Sucking can also cause a speech impediment for toddlers. Or cause them to speak less due to an object obstructing their mouth.

Now, to the moms who didn't use a noonie, kudos!!! Lol. My friend did that and her daughter doesn't suck a thumb or a doll. I couldn't imagine the sleepless nights because a baby just wanted to suck.

A noonie you can throw away after x amount of time. A thumb is on their hands *forever*!!!!!! There's no way you're going to be able to stop a baby from sucking a thumb as easily as a noonie. No way. It's their comforting tool.

funny, I just had a dentist appt to fill in my cavity, and I asked him about this. He absolutely agreed with me, and said there is no harm in a baby sucking their thumbs. It is what I stated earlier that if they are still sucking their thumbs after the toddler years when permanent teeth come in, then that is when they can have dental problems. He said from his studies he has learned that almost all babies break their own habit of finger sucking way before permanent teeth come in.
