Dissociative Mental Disorder and Sleepwalking

User Profile
My boyfriend suffered with sleepwaling when he was younger, but for the last two years has not had any problems with it. Last night whilst asleep he sat up screamed and then tried to strangle me, he has agreed to make a doctors appointment but is unable to get one for two weeks. What are the options that will be open to him once he sees the doctor. he is scared that he will do it again, he is also terrified of what the doctor will say and i just want to be able to offer him some support.

According to your boyfriend’s symptoms (sleepwalking in the past and unaware of aggressiveness during sleep), he might be experiencing a type of dissociative mental disorder. He needs medical attention from a mental health specialist. Nothing bad can happen to him if he visits a doctor; a specialist can only try to help him via examinations and observation.
