So Excited! And Confused Too...
Posted: 10-30-06 14:02pm

It's official now, I only have one month to go! Yay!!! I am getting so excited I can hardly find enough to do to pass the time quickly enough... My hubby is working for the salvation army for christmas so i'm so lonely... Question: my lamaze instructor said that I should take at least 6 weeks off before I return to work when brianne is born. I have an office job, and brianne is going to come to the office with me. I only work with 3 other people. There's just me, the office manager, and the maintenance supervisor and sometimes a volunteer receptionist. My job consists of a whole lot of nothing. We rent our gym facilities, so when there is someone using the gym, I stay to monitor. On tuesday nights, I have church for the kids, and wednesdays I have a supper for the neighborhood kids (i work for the salvation army). Other than that, I sit in the office all day trying to keep busy. I have 3 weeks paid sick days so far approved, but I don't think my boss wants to give me 3 extra weeks off paid or unpaid. What do I do? Do I realy need 6 weeks off if brianne is going to go to work with me anyways. She would be with me all day. I have my own office. Any advice?

Have you been at your job long enough to get flma???? If not the normal recovery period is 6 weeks for a normal delivery and 8 weeks for a section. I think that you boss dosesn't really have much of a choice to give you the time off paid or unpaid. You will find out that returning back to work, bringing you small infant with you will not be easy as you think. A baby is still really small at 3 weeks old and needs a lot of attention. I am not too sure if it will be easy for you to rtw at that time. But you will have to see everyone is different.

I have been working here for 1 year and 8 months. I know it isn't going to be easy to bring her here, I just think that i'm going to have a hard time getting time off. I want to take at least 6 weeks off but I don't know how to go about getting that much time. Is everyone entitled to 6 weeks off? (8 for a c-sec)? How do I know if I am entitled to it? My boss is giving me the run-around. Do I just tell them when i'll be returning? Or do I need a doctor's excuse? Will my doctor give me an excuse for that much time off?

every doctor knows the normal recovery period is at leas 6 weeks. If you ask your doctor to give you an excuse for your time off he will automaticly write you out for 6 weeks. You shouldn't have a problem there. I work in insurance and every pregnancy iis given 6-8 weeks off no less than that.

I would have your doctor write you out prior to your .E.D.D and let him tell your boss that you will need the time off. If he isn't happy with that you can call the labor board. And go from there.

You should take the 6 weeks off to just enjoy some tiome with your baby. That is quality time that you can't get back cause when you're working you will get distracted and have stress on your head.

Damn if I was entitled to it i'd take it!

Only one more month, it does not seem like it, time goes by too fast! The labor board is where to go if you have any big troubles in your job for example if they were showing discrimination. If you took a note from your dr saying that you had to take 6 weeks off maternity leave(mainly to get your body back in shape after having your baby) your boss cannot fire you, if he/she did then you could go to the labor board and get your job back. I think you should take the 6 weeks off but it is your choice but I would talk to your dr about it.
Good luck!

I definately want to take the 6 weeks off... I don't even want to go back to work... Hubby is trying to find a job, but he's still getting his buisness degree til spring. He is taking all online courses though, so he can do his work at will ( on his own time). He's trying to get a job with the bank the my brother works at. They are hiring for loan counseling. If he gets the job, then i'm not going back to work. If he doesn't, then i'll have to work temporarily until he's done with school in a few months... I go to the doc on the 9th. I'll ask him for an excuse then Smile

You will be surprise how much energy it takes to have a baby. You will most likely need the six to eight weeks off due to delivery and getting used to a new little person. Enjoy the time off, you will find work is still there after your six weeks and you will be much more comfortable dealing with it then.

I'm not questioning whether I want 6 weeks off or not, I am concerned at how I can get it. Of course I want 6 weeks, but my boss doesn't really care what others want. If he doesn't see a reason for me to be off that long, then I don't get it off. I was wondering about my rights for maternity leave here in the states and how I go about enforcing my rights. I would never go back to work if I didn't have to. I hate having a job. I would much rather be at home. But, my hubby is getting his business degree, so I have to work until he graduates. Fortunately though, when I do return to work, my baby girl comes with me. I work 30 hours a week, but I work in a private office so the office manager said baby brianne can be in there with me. I posted this topic to get advice on how to deal with my boss. I don't need convinced to spend time with my baby. She means more than anything to me, and I would never leave her if I didn't have to. I just don't know how to let my boss know what i'm entitled to. Every time I ask about maternity leave, he ignores me or says something like, "it'll get taken care of".

I work in louisiana. I didn't read all of the other posts, so maybe this was mentioned. If you've been working there for a certain amount of time. I'm not sure how long, you're entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid time off according to the family medical leave act. I'd look into it if he doesn't let. He has to let or you could take action.

I think it's one of those worker's rights things that is supposed to be posted in plain view. We have ours displayed in our break room. Of course, you could just .Google it and print it out for him, if he's being an ass about it.

Http://www.Dol.Gov/esa /whd/fmla/index.Htm might be a bit more helpful to you, since it hits right on the .F.M.L.A
