Q: Is contact with onion related to smell from vagina?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 25th, 2006
Back in July, me and my boyfriend took a little summer weekend vacation to his cabin. On the second night there, I was chopping up onions (something I normally never do...) for our dinner. However, I didn't eat any of them. The next day, I noticed a really really strong vaginal odor....that smelled very strongly of onions. But no discharge and no sign of a yeast infection/bv. It went away after a week or so. Well last week, for the first time since then, I was chopping up onions at my work, and later that night when I went home, I noticed the strong odor once again. It has been quite noticable for a week and a half or so, and I am thinking it's because now I frequently do chop up onions at my work (I am a supervisor at a pizza place). Like I said, I have no signs and symptoms of an infection, just this horrible odor. It's like just breathing in the scent makes the odor seep from my pores. I was wondering if you would be able to tell me if the contact with the onions is associated with the odor or not? I am almost positive it is, but I just need someone to tell me what this might be. Thanks!

I have never heard of a “vaginal odor that smells like onion” due to chopping onions. I have, however, heard of onion odor from the mouth after eating an onion. When you sense such an odor from your vagina again, you can go to a gynecologist to check the validity of this claim.
