Q: I missed my period last month: am I pregnant?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 25th, 2006
I had a 5 year birth control put into my arm in 1995, I was 14 and wasn't getting regular periods prior to the birth control. Once the medication was in my system, I didn't get a period for about 2 1/2 years. Then I got one for about 1 month and then another 2 1/2 years went by and nothing. Long story short, I got the Norplant removed Oct 2000 and haven't been on any birth control since. I have tried to get pregnant over the years with no success. This year (2006) around January I started getting them regularly around the same time every month. Usually the last week of the month or the first week of the next. Around Sept 20th or so, I had unprotected sex and missed my period for Sept. I took a test on 10/10 it was negative, but I think it was too early. Now it's 10/25, no period and I'm nervous. Should I just wait until next month to see what happens or should I invest the $15.99 for an EPT?

If you missed your period in September and had a negative pregnancy test result afterward, then it doesn’t seems likely that you are pregnant. A missed period is the first sign of possible pregnancy; a pregnancy test confirms or excludes the possibility because a missed menstrual cycle can be caused by other health conditions. You can take another home pregnancy test. If it is still negative, you might be experiencing a functional ovarian cyst. Functional ovarian cysts are typical for women of your reproductive age. These cysts produce estrogen that can delay a menstrual period. They usually disappear spontaneously within 2-3 months. You can go to your gynecologist for a blood-based pregnancy test (beta) and a vaginal ultrasound to confirm or exclude the possbility of an ovarian cyst.
