Well my girlfriend and I have been having unprotected sex for over a month now and she took a e.P.T. Pregnancy test last night. Well there is supposed to be a - or a in the circle. - is for negative and is for positive which everyone pretty much knows. She took the test and it came out with a - which means not preg. I woke up the next morning and looked at it and there was an almost complete line through the - which means it was making a what could this mean, she's preg or did the test mess up?

How long did you wait until you read the results? You are supposed to wait 3 minutes..After 10 minutes (i think) you are not suppsed to read it anymore.

She let me see the test about 2 minutes after she took it, then I looked at it b4 I went to sleep which was about 15 minutes later and it was still the - line, but when I woke up about 6 hours later it had the second line through it almost making the I mean how could it have made that if she didnt have that hormone that the test picks up??

Hmm...If I were you I would just have her take another test. Tell her to do it with her first morning urine when she wakes up. It sounds like she's not, but i'd take another just to be sure.

I think it's an evaporation line, which happens when the test is left to sit. You should count on whatever the test shows in the time the instructions say it takes to react. Though if you are worried i'ld retest to put your mind at rest.

"q: what if the test is negative after the 5 minute reaction time, but becomes positive after an hour?

A: you may be pregnant and just didn't have a high enough level of hcg to trigger the test within the usual time frame. Or that test may react over time, so you really need to test again either way in order to be sure of the result. Some brands indicate that an "evaporation line" will appear if the test is left to sit. Generally speaking, you should not rely on any positive result that does not show up within the time limit stated in the test instructions. All brands have the possibility of an evaporation line or chemical line."

Im thinking either its an evaporation line like tanya said or her hormone level was too low and the test took longer...Test again.

You haven't said whether she has missed her period or not.

If she hasn't missed it yet, wait a few days. If she still doesn't start, take another test. One of the dangers of testing early is that, if the pregnancy hormone is not built up enough, the test will not detect it. So basically, you will get a negative result even if you're pregnant.

Have her wait a few days, and then take another test first thing in the morning before she pees. First-morning will have a greater concentration of the hormone and will give a more accurate result if she is pregnant.
