Jejunal obstruction: looking for more knowledge about the co
Posted: 10-20-06 14:14pm

I have a son who was born with dilated loops in his bowel..He was diagnosed with a Jejunal obstruction...He has undergone 3 major surgeries of which some of his intestine has been removed because there is no blood flowing to that particular part of this intestine...With the most recent surgery the Dr.s told my husband and I that my son has a one major blood vessel which they are hoping does not kink around his intestine because it could be fatal to the baby....

Everytime my son has surgery though adhesions form and the intestine never gets a chance to heal it continues to cause blockage....The baby was currently put on Lasix medications to help with his high blood pressure and water retention...My son is swollen and is also on antibotics from possible inflmattion...Could the retention of water be causing so much drainage from his GT TUbe...

He currently has a GI Tube which is out putting about 300ML of green drainage into a bottle...The surgeon seems to think this is normal after surgery, However it very high...My question is when does the drainage decrease after a week or two and when is it cause for alarm if it does not decrease ??? If all goes well and my son is able to be fed can is he at risk for another obstruction if so what other alternatives do these Dr's have ??

I need help, I have not been able to bring my son home and I am at ends sometimes please provide me with some knowlege...

Thank You.

According to your description, your son is probably experiencing a strangulation type of "obstructive ileus". In such cases, not only is the intestinal passage disturbed, but the intestinal blood circulation is also disturbed. Disturbed blood circulation causes infarction (ischemic necrosis) of the intestinal wall that is life threatening and urgent surgical intervention is requested. Peritoneal adhesions can be a possible cause of repeated strangulation types of ileus.
Gastric suction is a standard procedure for removing the juice from the intestines after any surgical intervention on the gastro-intestinal tract. Antibiotic therapy for preventing infection is also a standard procedure. Water retention and consequent swelling and high blood pressure are a serious condition and kidneys have to be examined. Diuretics (Lasix) are given for expelling the sufficient water from the body and decreasing high blood pressure. You can consult a pediatric nephrologist for more information and to follow up.
