Q: Dry eyes: what could be causing these symptoms?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 20th, 2006
Recently I have become incredibly nauseated with painful fullness in the ears and was diagnosed with an inner ear endolympthatic hydrops problem. Head and neck pain too. I even had a test called Vemp test which showed how my poor eyes are confused by brain signals due to the inner ear problem making my chronic nausea worse. The doctor wanted to put me on diuretics but my eyes have not only not improved but worsened so I am too scared to do that. Both nausea and dry eye pain are completely unmanageable now. There is no cure. Also can't take any anti-histamines like otc Bonine/Meclizine used for motion sickness. I am nauseated just sitting here typing this. Reading, writing, tv are all so hard now as nmy nervous system is so sensitive to stimuli. Cant take Lexotan in an attempt to relax the nervous system because that family of drugs can cause dry eyes as well. Will see an ear doc i saw about this a few years ago when i had this problem this bad, then he had prescribed Serc/Betahistine. I dont know how a histamine would affect dry eyes since it is not an ANTI Histamine I guess. Seems like the things that they are most likely to prescribe are the most likely to add to dry eyes and since my problem began with a medication i took for just 2 short weeks, i worry about taking stuff that can add more permanent problems. I cannot afford it but am now not at work because of all this. The ear doctor does not know if there is a diuretic less likely to cause me problems. I dont know what to do. Any ideas appreciated. Thank you.

If you are experiencing problems with your eyes (“dry eyes”) you should see an ophthalmologist, not an ENT-specialist. It doesn’t seem likely that “dry eyes” are caused by diuretics, histamines or anti-histamines.
