Q: Diagnosed With Epilepsy.. But the Cause Is Unknown.

I am 38 years old. October 2002 I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Some kind of "adult onset". I have had almost all the testing done and still no answers as to why I have seizures. I was on a case study that is over (recently). I have been taking lamictal since 10/2/02. Works but I know that if I forget to take it I can tell.

History: I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia when I was 20 years old. I had passout episodes from my sugar level being too low. More recently (a few years now) it has become more noticeable that I hwas having seizures. I thought it was because when I induce sugar into my system that it would shock it. But we found by testing that I have been keeping my sugar level stabilized.

When I talked to my ex about it he told me (we divorced 10 years ago); "i told you to go to the doctor to have them check you for epilepsy, don't you remember? They just told you that it was your sugar level and to keep it stabilized and sent you home. You dont' remember that?" I told him that I didn't remember.

I of course wasn't aware that the shakes (thats what I called them) were actually seizures.

So anyhow, out of the blue (so I thought) on 9/30/02 I went into a weird seizure fit. Then another. Then I lost my ability to speak and was not able to move. Then I had another. These were grand mals. Scared the crap out of me. Since then I have had one at least every week. Unless I get enough rest, and all of the other stuff that will cause it with me I will have one. Being home helps because I can lay down if I feel it coming.

So is there anybody else that has been diagnosed but there isn't a known cause yet? This is scary and I don't understand it. Help!!

I Was 38 Too
Hi my name is jamie,
is your mother around to help you think about your childhood? Ihad spinal menigitis when I was 6 months old, bad case of the measles when I was 6 or 8, 2 concusions 1 when iwas 8 1 when I was 13. Then I had a bad car accident when I was 17. I had blow to the head really bad. Thats when the petit mals started to come. The first 10 years they would visit me 4 or 5 times a year. The next 5 or 7 years they came more. I had no idea. Then the last 3 years of my marriage they were coming 1 a month. When I left in 3 of 98 they came all the time. On may 4 98 I had a petit mal and went into a gran mal. Of course the ambulance came, I was with my bestfriend, she knew I was having these thing I had now idea what they were then. They did some test. A year and a half later I ended up at u.C.Davis in ca. After 4 neuros. After trying so many meds, getting worse losing my job after 7 years, and driving, all those docs. And the 1 iv'e been to, and the doc at u.C. Kept telling me brain surgery. I decided to go for it. It took me 8 months of testing to see if I was a canidate I was. Also going thru a divorce that whole time. I had my surgery in june of 2002 my judgement came in sept of 2002. They told me 40 to 60% chance I would never have seizures again. They have lessoned. They are still changing my meds every so often. Still not driving. Did go back to work at my old job 1 year after the surgery for 7 months, but after being a manager and clothing buyer it did'nt work out. So now I want to get a support group started in my town. So i'm working on that . Good luck. By the way the docs. Never could pin point what gave me epy. Jamie p.S. I think it was the car accident

Hi jamie, my name is kelly. I live in pollock pines. I too have been going to and was diagnosed with epilepsy at uc davis med.

Thank you for responding. They haven't said anything about surgery yet. I need to get a new med insurance before I discuss further treatment. They still haven't established why I am having them. When they did the eeg they found that I only had one little zap and the rest of the test was fine. However, my doctor down there told me that more than likely it did not show up because I had been drugged and was just resting and not in the middle of a seizure.
