Q: MRI results: can you help us understand what to do next?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 19th, 2006
My son has had back pain for three months. We have been to several doctors who just say give it time. We had several MRIs taken with these results: There is a large cystic lesion that begins at the L5 -S1 level extending inferiorly to the S3 level displacing the right s1 nerve root anteriorly and pushing the thecal sac to the left. This fluid collection posterior to the sacral vertebral bodies is of higher T2 signal than CSF more superiorly.
L5-s1 right sided disc bulge/protrusion.
Probable changes of previous Scheuermann's disease at the lower thoracic spine and at L1- L2
Probable small syrnix involving the conus medullaris
Findings compatible with an occult intrasacral meningocele with spina bifida occults.
They have just told him to take motrin and wait three months to see if it heals itself. He is getting very tired of the pain, what do I do now?

According to the MRI-report (meningocela and disk protrusion), your son requires neurosurgical intervention. You can ask for a second opinion from a neurologist or surgeon specializing in this type of intervention.
