How can we prevent another Premature Birth? Posted: 10-18-06 23:01pm
This is for my daughter. She lost a baby
last year to permature birth. She is now
pregnant again. She has had a cercluge(?)
and her cervix is thinning (about 7). She
is just over 20wks. the doctor has told
her if she goes into labour theres nothing
he can do. I feel he is really saying that
he won't do anything to stop labour
because the baby is not viable. I just
read about a couple that had their baby at
23wks but not without a fight with the
hospital and their lawyer stepping in. Is
that what it takes?

Doctors want to help prevent a premature
birth but there is very little that can be
done when delivery begins. Neither can
cercluge help when delivery begins.
Further, the benefit of cercluge in
preventing premature birth is under
question. You didn’t tell me anything
about the reasons for your daughter’s
last premature delivery. In many cases,
the reasons for premature birth remain
unknown. Real prevention is taken when
doctor and mother can find and treat the
reason(s) that may cause premature birth.
For instance, a cervical-vaginal infection
and inflammation (cervicitis) causes
premature maturation of the cervix. The
cervix becomes soft, short and the
cervical canal starts to extend. This is
one example. You might try to identify
the cause for repeated premature birth
with an OB-GYN or fertility
specialist.
