Hypechoic cyst in the left ovary...should I be concerned?... Posted: 10-18-06 19:03pm
have a question regarding ovarian cysts
and the possibility of them being
cancerous. I had a transvaginal ultrasound
on September 1 for no specific reason; my
gyn is just very cautious and prescribes
them for me once a year. The results
stated that I have a 1.3-cm hypechoic cyst
in the left ovary. No free fluid is seen
in the cul-de-sac. The cyst was classified
as complex even though it was fluid
filled; they classified it as complex
because it has more than one compartment
(kind of like a cyst within a cyst). The
recommendation from the radiologist and my
doctor was to get retested in 2-3
menstrual cycles. I've had two cycles
since then and am going for retest soon.
Does this sound like anything I need to be
concerned about? My doctor didn't seem too
concerned, but I've read that some complex
cysts can be cancerous. Should I be
concerned?

According to your reproductive age (you
are still having periods) and the cyst’s
dimensions (< 5cm in diameter) you might
be experiencing a functional cyst.
Functional cysts usually disappear
spontaneously after a few menstrual cycles
(2-3). If the cyst still exists after 3
months, laparoscopic removal of the cyst
is indicated. If the cyst was larger than
5cm in diameter or you were in
reproductive climax (no period any more),
the cyst should be removed immediately.
