Abortion can cause infertility but not due to an imbalance of hormones. Rather, abortion can become complicated with an endometrial infection that can cause strictures in the uterine cavity. This infection can also spread up to the oviducts and cause their occlusion. Strictures in the uterine cavity and occluded ovarian tubes can block movement of spermatozoids and egg cells. In these cases, if fertilization occurs, implantation is disturbed. Hystero-salpingo-graphy (HSG) is a contrast X-ray method for detecting blockages in the uterus and oviducts. Laparoscopies and uterus endoscopies are also used for the same purpose.
In cases of imbalanced hormones, the problem originates somewhere in the axis hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries. Imbalanced hormones usually cause ovulation to stop. Without ovulation, there no grown egg cell can be produced for fertilization. Hormones from the pituitary gland (FSH and LH) are important for both ovulation and growth of the egg-cell . Another hormone from the pituitary gland (prolactin) can stop ovulation if its quantity is above normal levels.
After ovulation, FSH and LH are not necessarily any greater in quantity. Instead, the hormones from the ovaries (estrogen and progesterone) become important for implantation of the fertilized egg-cell into the uterus’s mucosa and keeping the pregnancy healthy and normal after that. Another hormone (HCG) is derived from the embryo itself. hCG becomes important after implantation and supports the ovaries as they secrete estrogen and progesterone during the first 3 months of pregnancy before the placenta develops and starts to produce enough estrogen and progesterone on its own.
If the problem is somewhere in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus you can ask for more information about ovulation stimulators from your gynecologist.
