Q: Sleep Is Difficult

Hi, i'm a new user. I am 16 weeks pregnant. I am having some real troubling sleep issues. I can fall asleep without a problem, but will wake up within an hour and cannot get back to sleep. I'm tired, exhausted in fact, but I can't sleep.
I don't drink caffeine or do anything really stimulating before bed. I feel that I have good sleep hygiene, meaning I don't use my bed for anything but sex and sleep.
I have been told that this is the time in my pregnancy to get sleep, as in the next trimester getting comfortable will be a real issue.
Do any of you have any advice that worked for you? I am willing to try nearly anything, and i'm sure my family would appreciate it also. I'm a real grump!!

Considering you're pregnant, narrowing down the culprit will be nearly impossible until after you've delivered and hormones go back to normal. The pregnancy itself could be making it hard to stay asleep. Whatever you do, refrain from any type of medication, over the counter or prescription without consulting a doctor first. Ask your obgyn for assistance in this area. In the mean time...Relax. Maybe take a nice warm bath right before you normally go to sleep. You will need to readjust your normal positions of sleeping. I use to sleep on my stomach all the time until I was 6 months pregnant with my son. I can't sleep on my back, so the side was the best position. You can put a pillow between your knees and in front of your belly...Use as many extra pillows you think will help you stay comfortable.

Good luck with the baby.

Thank you for your reply eyeon!! I was beginning to think the only topics people reply to here are the really juicy or interesting ones. Lol.

I did talk to my ob-gyn about this, as it is really becoming a problem. She also suggested a pillow between my legs and said that I could use benedryl, so far neither has helped. Sad she said I shouldn't take baths, because she doesn't want me to do anything that raises my temperature. I had my daughter at 27 weeks and the only thing they can contribute my water breaking to was that I took baths. My apartment didn't have a shower, only a tub. That really bites!! I love to relax in the tub with a book. I do plan to cheat on that one occasionally.

It is frustrating because I couldn't seem to get enough sleep when I was pregnant with my daughter and didn't have a problem sleeping 12 hours a night. Now, if I get 1/3 of that i'm thrilled.

Thank you for your good thoughts. I am having a boy! Smile
