Q: False Negitive Tests
asked by: Expecting Grandma on October 11th, 2006

Our 18 year old daughter tell us she is 4 months pg. She has not had a period since june and has had 2 year tests and one blood test done by the doctor. They have all been negitive there for her doctor will not refer her to a genacologist.

She says a local family planning tells her she is pg by mean of a group of questions they asked her and she did a home test that came up possitive. She says the doctor will not expect this home test. She has not a physical exam.

Has anyone else experienced repeated negitive urine and blood test and have them turn out false? We have great concerns if she is pregnet and how is she to get around her family doctor that will not refer her?

Thanks you, sally Question

A home urine test is the same thing as a urine test in a doctor's office. It wouldn't be positive for her and negative for a doctor. If anything, I would not trust the test she did herself, because a doctor is familiar with running the test correctly and is much less likely to screw it up, twice.

And the blood test confirms it. She is not pregnant.

If she isn't having a period, she needs to find out why. I would take her to another doctor and ask for other reasons.

I don't think blood tests can be wrong. If it was negative then she is not pregnant.

Also, you don't need to be referred to an obgyn. Tell her to just call and make an appointment with one.

First of all if you are on an .H.M.O plan then yes you need to be refered to a .O.B.-g.Y.N however if she is of age to be having a period she should be seeing a gyn yearly anyway.

She needs to go see her doctor again and ask for test's to be done to regulate her cyle if she hasn't had a period and she isn't pregnant. There could be other problems that could cause her period not to come.

Thank you for replying. Our daughter moved out in july a few days after her 18th bd. We understand she is on a medical plan for low come though the states social service. I know states have made a lot of changes to cut costs so I can not say if she can or can not make an oppointment herself.

As too her period she had been on b cotrol since she was 15 becuase of illregualer bleeding between her periods. She went off for only reasons she knows in june. She says she was not trying to get pregnut but rahter wanted to wait till she moved out and got a different doctor...

It is very hard to be supportive to her and not mettle (spelling???). She is our oldest and first to move out. In part I question if she is pg but don't want excuse her. Yet if she is, we want to push her for prenatal care for our future grandchild's sake.

This is why I came this form. For open minded, non bias imput.

I have done a search on the net and unable to find hard facts about the accurcey (percentage of errers) on the blood test. When we questioned her she says the family planning center told her she has a rare blood mutation that causes the false negitive.

Does any one here know of a web site I find out information/facts on the tests used?

Thanks you again for replying, sally

If she's on state health care she should have a case worker and that person can tell her which gyn to go to. That's how it is most places.

If she went off her birth control in june and hasn't had a period since that's probably the reason. Quitting birth control can mess up your cycle.

I really don't think she's pregnant, blood tests are accurate. She should go get checked out anyway so she can get her period back on track.

A blood test is definitive. It would tell you if you were pregnant - or, rather, your daughter. If her doctor says she isn't pregnant after a blood test - especially at 4 months along - I would say she is not pregnant.

Birth control can mess up your cycles and you can stop having a period when you stop taking it.

Missing a period does not always mean you are pregnant.
