Q: Movement of Hand Is Mirrored By Other Hand

Good day. I am looking for insight/answers. When I initiate movement in my right hand/digits/arm...My left hand/digits/arm respond as well (and vice versa) but to a slightly lesser degree.

I am a healthy 36 year old female and have had this my whole life. I have learned to adjust for it and it does not bother me other than when people notice and ask me "what on earth are you doing" ... Ie: scratching my arm with one hand and the other hand is scratching the air. My husband thinks it is hilarious, other than when I reach up with my right hand for my seatbelt and inadvertently hit him in the head with my left.

I have searched off and on for years to find out why this happens but to no avail (short of booking appointment with neurologist). I had mentioned it to an md at one point and he looked at me and shook his head and changed the subject, so I have not mentioned it to anyone again.

However, I would like to know what it is, why it is and does it relate to any disorder, progressive disease?

All kidding aside, I have a 3 year old daughter who increasingly shows sign of it, which implies to me it is hereditary, however no one else in my family is this way. Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated! Thank you. Smile

Gordita, this is an interesting situation. It must be very rare but since you have this condition, someone else must, too. I guess you've never heard of anyone else in your family having it? Have you found out what it is? If not, i'd think it would be interesting to researchers, you might write to some medical schools asking for information. A teaching hospital might even be willing to exam you. Though I don't think there's going to be an easy "cure", and you are living with it. Just that you'd maybe get some kind of answer.

If I can help you locate addresses to write to, let me know.

Hand movements mimicked by other hand
I too have this same interesting condition, I'm a 30yr male and first noticed it when I was a kid playing piano. I asked a doctor about it and he thanked me for telling him, I think he thought it to be very interesting but nothing to be concerned about. I've decided that whatever connections I have controlling my hand movements from my brain are somehow going to both sides.

I also found the best way to show others is to lay my hands flat on a table, move fingers on one hand and the opposing hands tendons will mimic the identical movements.

Whilst I think this is quite incredible, and funny at times (brushing my teeth is fun). I too have wondered if it may be linked to something that may come with older age.

Regards, another person with funny mimicking hand thing.

I am a 22 yr female and I also have this condition (and have for as long as I can remember). I am hesitant to bring it up with a doctor, as most people who know about it are under the impression that it is a habit and can be corrected through will power. Does anyone have any information about this? I have tried searching for an explanation on the internet but have not found one.
