Q: Anxiety Related Bladder Problems?

Hello everybody, I am a college student currently (i don't know how long I will last with this problem). Over the years I have noticed that I have some type of anxiety related bladder problem. It's to the point where I can't focus in my classes (for fear of needing to go to the restroom, along with the fear of being the center of attention). I get really nervous in public especially when sitting down in crowded rooms, and all this anxiety seems to have an effect on my bladder. About 30 minutes or so into classes the effects get much worse, to the point where my face reddens and I feel like I urgently need to go to the bathroom. The urge is abnormally strong, and I know I shouldn't need to go to the bathroom. I have been on and off of paxil for years at a time, and i'm really not sure if it helps. Out of desperation I have started taking it again. I can't seem to find any information on disorders like this on the internet. It's not such a big problem outside a classes since theres usually a bathroom which I can freely get to, but i'm sure you can see how this would be a terrible affliction to be troubled with in classes (very embarassing as well).

Has anybody heard of a disorder like this? What should I do?

It's too the point where I hate my life, and I feel like im just 1 person out of billions of people with this problem. My life would be so much easier without this. I just want to feel like a normal person.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,
stephen

I dont know if I can help, but at least you know someone has a similar prob, but just not as serious.
Ive been depressed since I was a kid, but it went away for about a year, and for the last 3months ive been depressed again.
Ive had bladder infections a lot when I was a child.
So for the last 3months, when I feel really depressed or when im around a lot of people and im frustrated, I have to go to straight to the bathroom.
I find at work, I find im not in control of my bladder and as soon I need to go- I have to go!
Ive been to the docotrs who have said I dont have another bladder infection. And I dont know wot it is at all.
It doesnt happen all the time, but it happens enough to get worried about.

Im sorry I cant help you, or diognose you... But are symtpoms are similar.
Good luck buddy.

I've experienced the same exact problem since I was 13. I'm 20 now and its progressively gotten worse and done a lot of damage to my personal and social life. I've sought help for it but doctors don't seem to understand it and are reluctant to believe that it is truly a psychological problem worth diagnosing. I did try lexapro but the effect was pretty minimal. Ativan helped somewhat but doctors will not prescribe it to me! I've never heard of anyone else experiencing this problem until i came across this forum. Has anyone come up with any solutions or heard of any treatments for this type of problem?

Same Situation
I have a quite similiar situationg going on. For example it has to do with knowing what I got as my grade, or I'm argueing with my boyfriend my stomach goes into knotts, and it starts to hurt really bad and I just have to go to the restroom! Just randomly I overthink stuff and it just gets to me which causes this bladder problem. But idk I was thinking the way to get rid of this is try to relax and calm yourself, in a meditating way, have your ipod of relaxing music around and just listen to it saying positive things, and the nervousness goes which means you don't have to go bathroom as much. Try something similar to that because I have and it sometimes work if I concentrate hard.

I am also a college student and have been for the last couple of years. I've always had to go to the bathroom but over the last six months it has gotten progressively worse. I have had every test imaginable to man done to me and the uroligist says everything is normal. I took Ditropan for a while and it helped a little, but not enough. It's a miserable, hopeless feeling to have a doctor tell you he doesn't know why you are going through this. I have a sensation and frequency to urinate and I just realized today, after hundreds of dollars later, that maybe my anxiety is causing me this grief. So I'm going to do some research on how to de-stress myself. So whoever is going through this hang in there!

BLADDER ANXIETY
I too suffered from this hideous problem, after exhausting ALL avenues I came across a web site called panic away by Joe Barry. I downloaded his manual and have read and followed his very simple advice. I could not even go into the supermarket to get a loaf of bread without the dread of needing to go to the toilet.. nearly ruined my life.. this manual is absoulutley magnificent I am now 98% cured.. I would totally reccommend if you want to regain control of this debilitating illness GET THE MANUAL.. its worth every cent.. Megan.. New Zealand
